CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's soccer team
dropped a Big South Conference match to the Winthrop Eagles on Thursday night,
4-0.
Winthrop (8-6-2, 5-2-2 Big South) scored all four goals in
the first half to get past PC (2-14-0, 2-7-0).
PC returns to action on Saturday night as the Blue Hose
honor their seniors in the evening's 7 p.m. contest against Gardner-Webb.
The Eagles' Grace Radler picked up three assists on the
night.
Tori Lopez (Snellville, Ga.) led the Blue Hose with four
shots, including three on goal.
Krystyna Freda began the scoring by converting a Radler
through pass in the 13th minute to put Winthrop ahead, 1-0.
Lia Gorden struck a little less than four minutes later on
another breakaway chance from Radler before Ariel Kunde headed in a Radler
cross in the 20th minute. The cross curled in front of the goal line
and Kunde finished the chance from point-blank range.
Allie VandeWater capped the scoring in the 26th
minute, taking a Gorden pass at the top of the box and firing a shot into the
left side to bring the scoreline to its eventual final result, 4-0.
PC goalkeeper Jordan Broadway (Chapin, S.C.) made one save
in the opening half before freshman keeper Sydney Fontenot (Austin, Texas)
entered at halftime. Fontenot stopped four shots and shut out the Eagles in the
final frame, keeping out several difficult Winthrop opportunities.
The Blue Hose defense and Fontenot held strong in the second
half, limiting quality scoring chances from the back line as Fontenot made the saves.
Lopez and Christy Schofer (Powder Springs, Ga.) tested
relief goalkeeper Sarah Schippers with one shot apiece in the second period. Keri
O'Neill (Peachtree City, Ga.) and Kelly Kozera (Rome, Ga.) each tallied a shot
on goal on the night as well.
Taylor Patti (Clover, S.C.) nearly put PC on the board in
the closing minutes, but her shot from in close skipped narrowly right of the
net.
