CLINTON, S.C. – Shonda Burnside turned in the Presbyterian
College women's basketball program's first double-double since 2010-11 to lift
the Blue Hose to a win over visiting Southern Wesleyan on Monday night, 62-50.
PC (2-2) forced 25 Southern Wesleyan (1-5) turnovers and
outscored the Warriors in each half en route to the win. The Blue Hose play the
second game of a back-to-back homestand against South Carolina State on Tuesday
evening at 7 p.m.
Burnside finished the night with 12 points and 12 rebounds, becoming
the first Blue Hose with a double-double since Sherece Smith delivered 16
points and 10 rebounds against Gardner-Webb on February 26, 2011. The feat marks Burnside's second of her career and the first since 12 points and 10 rebounds against Gardner-Webb on February 20, 2010.
Dria David (Lawrenceville, Ga.) nearly achieved a
triple-double with nine points, eight assists and seven rebounds. Karlee Taylor
(Asheville, N.C.) paced the Blue Hose in scoring with 17 points while Mariah Pietrowski (Elizabethton, Tenn.) poured in 16.
Southern Wesleyan's Laura Johnson led her team in scoring
and Ashley Cooper posted 13 points and nine rebounds.
Up 30-22 at halftime, the Blue Hose fended off a surging
Warriors squad early in second as the visitors pulled within three points four
minutes in, 37-34.
Southern Wesleyan immediately answered a David three-pointer
with one of its own, but Taylor then knocked one down on the other end to
kickstart a stretch that gave PC eight points of breathing room.
Both teams struggled to find the basket when PC took a 48-40
halfway through the period. A David free-throw at 11:56 stood as the last point
scored until Southern Wesleyan converted a layup with 7:49 left in the game, a
span of 4:07.
Taylor answered on a rainbow from downtown to give a
nine-point lead. PC's advantage hovered around 10 for the rest of the game as
the home side led by as many as 13 down the stretch.
The Blue Hose shot 37.7 percent from the floor (26-for-69)
and boasted 20 assists, 16 steals and seven blocks. The assists total marks the
most since 21 against UNC Asheville on February 12, 2011. PC overcame a cold
day from long range, going 7-for-26 for a 26.9 percent clip.
PC held the Warriors at bay for most of the first half
before breaking an 18-18 tie with a 12-4 run to take a 30-22 advantage into the
halftime break. The run began with a Kasey Hobbie (Spring Lake, N.J.) layup and
featured four points each from Burnside and Pietrowski.
Burnside dominated in the opening period, scoring 10 points
and collecting nine rebounds. She also blocked two shots—including a vicious
swat midway through the frame—and went 5-for-7 from the field.
Pietrowski also went 5-for-8 en route to 10 points at the
break and David enjoyed a helpful first stanza, dishing out five assists.
