LEXINGTON, Va. – Ignacio Monchetti (Montevideo, Uruguay)
scored two goals to lift the Presbyterian College men's soccer team to a 2-1
road win over VMI in the regular season finale on Saturday, putting the Blue
Hose through to the Big South Conference Championship tournament.
“It's been a tough season but I'm really proud of how the
seniors pulled through today and qualified us to play in the postseason tournament,” said
head coach Bret Boulware. “To do it in the first year we're eligible really
means a lot to these guys who have worked so hard for the past three-plus
years. We got a lot of 'firsts' today and we can use this as a stepping stone
for the future, to show that we can compete at this level.”
PC ends the regular season at 4-15-0 and improves to 3-7-0
in the Big South Conference, securing the eighth-place spot and a quarterfinal match at Coastal Carolina on Tuesday. VMI ends its season at
2-14-1 overall and 1-8-1 in league action.
PC's four wins match the most since 2007 and its three Big
South wins equal 2011's total as the most in the Division I era. The victory
also snaps a seven-game skid and gives the program its first road win since a
September 28, 2008 victory at USC Upstate.
Monchetti's two goals marked his first multi-goal game of
his career, and the first put the Blue Hose in front on his fourth goal of the
campaign. The sophomore fired a shot and picked up the rebound, flicking the
ball over goalkeeper Taylor Feuerstein's head to give PC the lead in the 24th
minute.
Goalkeeper Tyler Beadle (Douglasville, Ga.) came up big on Saturday,
stopping seven second half shots en route to his fourth win of the season and
tying Mark Owens' 2007 campaign for the most in the Division I era.
The Blue Hose raced to a fast start, piling seven shots on
goal while holding the Keydets to zero in the first half. The team's nine total
shots on goal set a new season high as Byron Quinatoa (Santo Domingo de los
Colorados, Ecuador) tested VMI's keeper three times as well.
Monchetti struck again in the 60th minute to extend
PC's advantage. Jonny Mercado (Lilburn, Ga.) fed Monchetti a cross in the box
two yards away from the net to set up the score.
Beadle made four saves early in the second half as VMI applied
pressure in looking to narrow the gap. The redshirt junior stopped seven shots
in the match, all in the second frame.
VMI cut PC's lead in half in the 78th minute when
Kyle Farmer intercepted a PC pass and scored his third goal of the season. From there, however, the PC defense and Beadle held strong
to keep VMI behind and seal the win, as the goalkeeper stopped three shots after the VMI score.
