PC Knocks Off Gardner-Webb in Overtime, 59-57

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Presbyterian College women's basketball team used three consecutive points from Sherece Smith (Clemson, S.C.) in final seconds of overtime to clinch its third straight Big South Conference road win with a Monday night victory over Gardner-Webb, 59-57.

PC improves to 11-12 with the win and 5-7 in the Big South, tying last year's total for the most Big South wins in a season. The game marked PC's first overtime game of the year. Gardner-Webb falls to 2-21 and 1-12 in league action. PC returns home for its next game on Saturday against Radford at 3 p.m. in the team's annual Play 4Kay contest to raise awareness for breast cancer research.

Trailing 57-56 with 12 seconds left in overtime, Smith drove to the basket and finished a layup to put PC ahead by one, 58-57. Dria David (Lawrenceville, Ga.) then fouled Mayhana Dunovant on the inbounds pass and the Runnin' Bulldog missed the front end of a one-and-one.

Smith came up with the rebound, dribbled four seconds off the clock before being fouled and knocked down a free throw on the other end with five seconds left. Gardner-Webb raced down the floor but could not get a shot off and PC left with the win, 59-57.

The Blue Hose received a season-high 15 points and a team-high seven rebounds from Smith, one point shy of her career best. Smith also led the squad in assists and steals, racking up four each to set a new career high in steals. Karlee Taylor (Asheville, N.C.) scored 15 for PC as well.

Mariah Pietrowski (Elizabethton, Tenn.) grabbed five rebounds on the night, helping her pass Chelsea Wright for the school's career record in Division I rebounds. Pietrowski's current tally of 436 eclipses Wright's 434, set from 2007-2011. The junior took over the as the school's career Division I scoring leader earlier this season.

Catrina Green led Gardner-Webb with 16 points, while Jessica Heilig posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

The Blue Hose shot 46.8 percent from the floor, knocking down 22 of 47 attempts. The two sides were even in steals and assists, with 10 apiece.

PC led by two at halftime but hit only seven field goals in the second half as Gardner-Webb took the visitors to overtime.

The Blue Hose clung to their lead throughout the second period but the Runnin' Bulldogs took the lead with 7:11 left in the second, 45-44. The advantage marked Gardner-Webb's first lead since the 14:44 mark of the first half.

The lead changed hands until Taylor converted a three-pointer with 1:48 to go nudge PC back ahead. Dunovant answered with a trey of her own, but two Taylor free throws in the final minute tied the teams at 53-53 and sent the game into overtime.

In overtime, Taylor hit her third three of the day with 1:58 remaining to bring the Blue Hose back from two down. Another Green layup put Gardner-Webb back in control, but Smith and the PC defense took it from there to earn the win, breaking a three-game losing streak at Paul Porter Arena.

The Blue Hose led for much of the first half but a late Runnin' Bulldog rally narrowed PC's lead as the Blue Hose entered halftime ahead by two, 34-32.

The visitors in blue and white shot 59.1 percent from the floor (13-for-22) in the first half and scored 14 of their 34 points off of turnovers. Smith contributed heavily to the PC offense, leading the team with three assists and eight points at the break.

The two sides swapped baskets until PC took a steady lead at the 14:31 mark with a Parker jumper that put the Blue Hose ahead, 11-10. PC sunk five of its first six field goal attempts to put points on the board.

PC used seven straight points from Devin Fothergill (Somerset, Ky.) to help grab a four-point advantage but Gardner-Webb tied up the game two more times at 18-18 and 20-20, with the final deadlock coming at 5:19. The Blue Hose then went on a 9-2 run to lead by seven 3:07 before halftime.

The Runnin' Bulldogs ratcheted up the pressure down the stretch, however, and two three pointers and a layup from Eliana Scanlon helped the home team pull within two at the break, 34-32.
