PC moves to 4-3 on the year while USC Upstate improves to 3-2.

The Spartans took the doubles point by a slim margin and the Blue Hose battled to three sets in the day's final two matches.

William O'Connell (Nadi, Fiji) picked up wins in singles and doubles play, earning victories at No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles with partner Zachary Sprouse (Hilton Head, S.C.).

The duo of O'Connell and Sprouse took down Pierre Vernin and Yvon Haessig at the second flight, 8-3, while Edward Snead IV (Greenwood, S.C.) and Nathan Crocker (Clinton, S.C.) battled but fell to Gonzalo Blanco and Jacob Darling by the same score.

At No. 1, Rafael Berghaus (Offenbach, Germany) and Grayson Mills (Lilburn, Ga.) took six games from the pair of Matthias Kidler and Tyler Grove but they were not enough as the Blue Hose fell, 8-6.

In singles play, PC took two matches thanks to O'Connell and Mills. At No. 2, Mills dispatched Grove, 6-3, 6-2, to pick up his fourth singles win of the year. The victory ties him with Sprouse and Berghaus for the team lead.

At the third flight, O'Connell topped Haessig, 6-3, 6-2. The junior improves to 3-1 at No.3 on the season.

Snead dropped a fourth-flight match to Blanco, 6-2, 6-3, and Ryan Walters (Augusta, Ga.) stumbled against Darling, 6-4, 6-3.

Trailing 3-2, PC provided their closest singles matches of the day at No. 5 and No. 1.

Sprouse squared off against Vernin at the fifth flight and battled to three sets. After falling behind 6-4 after the opening set, the senior gutted out a 7-6 victory in set number two. The Spartan held off Sprouse in the third, however, winning 6-2.

The result clinched the win for USC Upstate, but Berghaus and Kidler still continued their matchup of two German-born student-athletes at No. 1.

Kidler won the first set, 6-4, but the Blue Hose rallied for a 7-6 second set win. The third set belonged to the Kidler, though, 6-3.

PC travels to Spartanburg on Thursday for a 3 p.m. contest against Wofford at 2:30 p.m.
