PC Tennis Teams Fall to Kennesaw State, 5-2

CLINTON, S.C. - The Presbyterian College men's and women's tennis teams each fell on Saturday to Kennesaw State by 5-2 margins.

The PC men's team sees its record move to even at 4-4. The PC women move to 1-4.

Sunday's PC women's tennis match against North Carolina A&T has been postponed due to forecasts of rain in the area. Check GoBlueHose.com for information on a rescheduled date as it becomes available.

MEN'S

The Blue Hose swept doubles play but won only one singles match to fall, 5-2.

Rafael Berghaus (Offenbach, Germany) and Grayson Mills (Lilburn, Ga.) knocked off Gianni Kubin and Gokalp Ozdemir at the top flight, 8-5. The win bumps the pair's record together to 6-2.

At No. 2, Zachary Sprouse (Hilton Head, S.C.) and William O'Connell (Nadi, Fiji) gutted out a win over Alex Toliver and Louis Theodor, 9-8, running their record to 4-0 as a duo. Edward Snead IV (Greenwood, S.C.) and Andrew Brigham (Birmingham, England) battled to a 9-8 victory at No. 3 as well, holding off Alexander Pena and Simon Janik.

In singles action, Mills held off Alex Toliver in a top-flight thriller. After dropping the first set, 6-2, Mills rallied to win the next two, 6-2, 6-3. Mills now leads the team with five singles wins on the year.

Brigham made his first singles appearance of the year in a tight contest against Kubin at the fourth flight. The Owl knocked off Brigham, 6-4, 7-5.

At No. 2, Berghaus dropped a match to Theodor, 6-1, 6-1, and O'Connell fell at No. 3 to Janik, 6-3, 6-1.

Sprouse fell short at No. 5 to Ozdemir, 6-4, 6-3, and Snead stumbled at No. 6 to Pena, 6-2, 6-3.

The team returns to action on Tuesday when PC hosts Furman at 2 p.m.

WOMEN'S

Patricia Alves (Campinas, Brazil) and Caroline deLoach (Columbia, S.C.) captured singles wins against Kennesaw State, continuing their hot starts to the spring season.

Alves handled Jana Hueckinghaus at No. 4, taking a win from the Owl in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.

deLoach found herself in a battle at the fifth flight against Therese Lagerkvist. After toughing out a win in the first set, 7-5, Lagerkvist took the second, 7-6 (7-3). With the day's result already decided, deLoach battled to a 10-3 win in the 10-point tiebreaker to earn the victory.

Alves and deLoach led the squad with four singles wins each on the year.

At the top flight, Paige Oelke (Athens, Ga.) fell to Vera Shkundina, 8-4, while Greer Ransom (Athens, Ga.) suffered a 6-0, 6-1 setback to Alexandra Apostu at No. 2.

At No. 3, Cara Caruso (Roswell, Ga.) dropped a match to Virginie Stein, 6-2, 6-2, and Lucia Leahy (Charlotte, N.C.) nearly took the opening set but came up short to Kelsey Kennedy, 7-5, 6-1.

In doubles action, Caruso and Lindsay Krause (Roswell, Ga.) earned an 8-3 victory over Lagerkvist and and Kennedy. The match marked the first time the two played together this season.

At No. 2, deLoach and Ransom fell to Stein and Hueckinhaus, 8-0, while Oelke and Alves stumbled at the top flight to Shkundina and Apostu, 8-4.

PC's next scheduled match after Sunday's postponement will fall on Saturday, February 25 against Radford at 10 a.m. at the Templeton Tennis Courts.
