Women's Basketball Rallies to Knock Off Winthrop, 63-60

ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Presbyterian College women's basketball team overcame a 10-point second-half deficit against Winthrop on Saturday, thanks to 20 points from Mariah Pietrowski (Elizabethton, Tenn.) and a career-high 19 points from Kristen Stevens (Pickerington, Ohio) to earn its first Big South Conference road win of the season, 63-60.

PC moves to 9-12 on the year and 3-7 in the Big South. The win matches last year's campaign for the most victories in a Division I season for PC. Winthrop sees its record even at 11-11 overall and 5-5 in conference action.

Tied 30-30 at halftime, Winthrop charged out of the gates to eventually take a 51-41 lead with 8:48 remaining on a Samiya Wright jumper. Stevens answered with a three-pointer 21 seconds later to kick-start a Blue Hose comeback and a nail-biting final few minutes.

Two Pietrowski free throws and a layup around two Dequesha McClanahan free throws cut the Winthrop lead to five. Two more Pietrowski layups and a Dria David (Lawrenceville, Ga.) play in the paint capped the rally and put PC up with 3:54 to go, 54-53.

McClanahan hit a jumper with 2:39 left, ending a stretch of 6:09 without a Lady Eagle field goal and giving the home team the lead back.

Pietrowski converted a free throw to bring the teams even at 2:18 and finished a layup 48 seconds later to push the Blue Hose ahead, 57-55.

A foul on the junior sent Pietrowski back to the line for two shots with 38 seconds left. She hit both, but Winthrop raced down the floor and Diana Choibekova drained a three-pointer to cut PC's lead to one with 33 seconds left.

Winthrop began to foul as PC attempted to use the clock to its advantage. In the bonus, Karlee Taylor (Asheville, N.C.) hit two free throws to restore the Blue Hose advantage to three.

With nine seconds left, Choibekova missed a three-pointer but drew contact with David to receive three free throws and a chance to tie. The Eagle hit the first and third but missed the second, and Sherece Smith (Clemson, S.C.) converted two crucial free throws on the other end to seal the win, 63-60.

Pietrowski went 7-for-13 from the floor on the afternoon and scored 17 of her 20 points in the second half. The junior also knocked down six free throws, including five crucial shots down the stretch. Pietrowski also led the team in rebounds, with seven.

Stevens tied her career high with 19 points and set a new high water mark with five three pointers. Her first trey of the day put in her sole possession for fifth place on the program's career three pointer list, passing Darah Huffman's (1995-99) mark of 150.

McClanahan led Winthrop with 23 points. Choibekova scored 22, going 5-for-15 from long range.

Chelsea Parker (Asheville, N.C.) and Smith each tallied five assists for PC. Parker's five sets a new career-high for the junior.

PC shot 43.1 percent (22-for-51) from the floor and went 12-for-14 from the free-throw line. The Blue Hose also posted 17 assists, the most for PC in a Big South Conference game since 21 against UNC Asheville on February 12, 2011.

The two sides played a fast-paced first half en route to a 30-30 tie at halftime. The Blue Hose worked together for 11 assists in the opening 20 minutes and shot 46.2 percent (12-for-26) from the floor. PC also found luck from downtown, shooting 55.6 percent (5-for-9) from behind the three-point line.

The teams swapped the lead several times early on but a 7-0 PC run rallied the visitors back from a 20-14 deficit with 6:33 left in the half. Diana Choibekova knocked down four three-pointers in the first half, but Stevens answered with three of her own for nine first half points.

Winthrop went back up by five less than a minute later, 26-21. A Chelsea Parker (Asheville, N.C.) three-pointer and another from Stevens helped pull PC battle against Winthrop's scoring. Pietrowski  scored PC's last three points of the half to tie the game for the fifth time and send the teams into the locker room tied, 30-30.

PC returns to action on Saturday, February 11 at UNC Asheville. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
