CLINTON, S.C. - The Presbyterian College men's tennis team rolled to a pair of wins on Saturday at Templeton Tennis Courts, blanking USC Lancaster, 7-0, before shutting out Limestone, 6-0.
PC ends the day with a 10-9 record. Limestone falls to 7-5 and USC Lancaster moves to 8-7.
The Blue Hose dropped only two sets all day, both against Limestone. The team also went 3-0 in doubles action against USC Lancaster while the threat of rain canceled doubles play against Limestone.
Four players went 2-0 in singles action in Rafael Berghaus (Offenbach, Germany), Zachary Sprouse (Hilton Head, S.C.), William O'Connell (Nadi, Fiji) and Andrew Brigham (Birmingham, England).
The day began with the Blue Hose rolling past the Lancers of USC Lancaster. In doubles play, Berghaus and O'Connell handled Dave Fosnacht and Wilson Mathewes, 8-5, while Brigham and Sprouse took down Pedro Rodriguez and Neil Andersen at No. 2, 8-3. At the third flight, Nathan Crocker (Clinton, S.C.) and Edward Snead IV (Greenwood, S.C.) knocked off Joey Nylund and Matthew Canelon, 8-1.
In singles play, Berghaus blanked Rodriguez without giving up a game at the top flight, 6-0, 6-0. O'Connell rolled through Mathewes at the second flight, 6-3, 6-3, and Sprouse dispatched Fosnacht, 6-3, 6-2.
At the fourth flight, Brigham downed Andersen, 6-1, 6-0, and Crocker picked up a victory over Justin Lewis, 6-0, 6-1. At No. 6, Walters earned his sixth victory of the year by topping Canelon, 6-3, 6-1.
Against Limestone, Berghaus faced Carlos Yanes at the top flight and took a hard-fought win, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. The win gave Berghaus his team-leading 11th of the season.
Another close match came at the fifth flight between Brigham and Lucas Guinski, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Gonzalo Asis (Madrid, Spain) also found himself in a tight contest at No. 6. Asis squared off against Daniel Lopez in search of a 2-0 record this season and succeeded in three sets, 6-0, 6-7, 7-6.
At the second flight, Grayson Mills (Athens, Ga.) held off Mike Stephenson, 7-6, 6-2. At the third flight, Sprouse picked up his 10th win of the season in a battle against Rafael Ferla, 7-6, 7-6.
O'Connell dominated at the fourth flight against Abraham Lascari Diaz, 6-1, 6-0.
PC returns to action on Wednesday at Buies Creek, N.C., at Big South Conference foe Campbell. The match is slated to begin at 10 a.m.
