DAVIDSON, N.C. – Catherine Ellis (Charlotte, N.C.) scored a Division I-era-high seven goals for the Presbyterian College women's
lacrosse team on Saturday, but the Blue Hose dropped their National Lacrosse
Conference debut in a wild contest at Davidson, 21-15.
PC moves to 1-9 on the year and
0-1 in NLC play. Davidson improves to 4-5 and 1-0.
Ellis' seven goals mark a new
Division I record for the Blue Hose and give her 27 for the season. The
sophomore scored three in the first half and four in the second.
PC won the turnover battle, 18 to
16, and collected 14 ground balls to Davidson's 16. The Blue Hose trailed by
seven late in the first half but pulled to within one shortly after halftime.
Megan Schaaf (Ellicott City, Md.)
led the squad in assists, notching two.
Kirstin Stenoien (Houston, Texas) controlled a season-high seven draws
while seven different players caused a turnover.
Samantha Arey (New Albany, Ohio)
played 56:39 and made five saves in the effort.
Davidson went ahead early, scoring
six of the game's first seven goals. Ellis put PC on the board thanks to a Liz Davis
(Alpharetta, Ga.) assist to make the score 3-1 during the run.
PC rattled off three straight
goals to pull within two, 6-4. Jena Ready (Charlotte, N.C.), Schaaf and Laura
Meade (Acworth, Ga.) found the net, with Schaaf helping on Meade's third of the
season.
Seven different players scored PC's
first seven goals of the game.
Davidson scored but Brianne Ward
(Cincinnati, Ohio) netted her fifth to keep PC close, 7-5.
The Wildcats then scored five
straight goals, including two from Erin Doherty, to lead 12-5 with 7:39 left in
the first half.
The Blue Hose had an answer,
however, as Stenoien, Davis and Ellis combined to end the period on a 4-0 PC
run. Ellis scored the last two to send the teams into halftime with Davidson
ahead, 12-9.
Davidson scored 25 seconds into
the second half before a pair of Ellis goals around a successful Lauren Lefeber
(Waxhaw, N.C.) shot cut Davidson's lead to just one goal, 13-12.
Unfortunately for the Blue Hose,
seven Wildcat goals proved enough for the home team to hold on. Ellis scored
two more and Ward notched another but Davidson took the win, 21-15.
PC next plays at No. 11 Vanderbilt
on Wednesday, April 4 at 3 p.m.
