ORLANDO, Fla. – The Presbyterian College men's tennis team
closed its Spring Break competition in Orlando on a high note, picking up
6-1 victories over Grand Valley State and Saint Joseph's on Friday.
PC moves to a combined 8-8 through fall and spring play and
has won four of its last five matches.
The Blue Hose swept doubles play against both squads and had
four players go 2-0 on the day in Ragael Berghaus (Offenbach, Germany), William
O'Connell (Nadi, Fiji), Nathan Crocker (Clinton, S.C.) and Ryan Walters (Augusta,
Ga.)
Berghaus won his team-leading eighth and ninth matches of
the year by taking down Andrew Darrell of Grand Valley State (4-6, 6-4, 10-6)
and Jeff Kessler of Saint Joseph's (6-4, 6-3) at the top flight.
At No 2., O'Connell made quick work of his opponents when he
knocked off Benny Delgado of Grand Valley State (6-3, 6-2) and Max Montague of
Saint Joseph's (6-3, 6-4) in straight sets.
Crocker won two battles at the fourth flight. He began with a
7-5, 6-4 win over Grand Valley State's Josh Kadzan and earned his second
victory by outlasting Saint Joseph's Paul Ganev in a marathon, 6-7, 7-5, 10-6.
Walters dispatched Dan Jorboe at No. 6 against Grand Valley
State (6-3, 6-1) and took down Jason Sisti of Saint Joseph's in a three-set
battle, 6-7, 6-2, 6-0.
Against Grand Valley State, Edward Snead IV (Greenwood,
S.C.) gave PC a win at No. 5 by pushing past John McDonald, 6-1. 6-1.
Zachary Sprouse (Hilton Head, S.C.) earned a victory against
Saint Joseph's at No. 3. The senior took on Peter Cognetti and took both sets
by the same margin, 6-3, 6-3.
In doubles action, O'Connell and Berghaus ran their record
to 5-0 together this year with an 8-6 top-flight win over GVSU and an 8-6
victory over Saint Joseph's.
Gonzalo Asis (Madrid, Spain) made his first appearance this
year alongside Sprouse and the two gutted out a win over Saint Joseph's at No.
2, 9-7. Sprouse and Snead handled Grand Valley State at the second flight as well, 8-4.
At No. 3, Snead and Crocker held off Saint Joseph's (9-8)
and Crocker and Walters knocked off Grand Valley State (8-4).
The Blue Hose return to action on Wednesday when they host
Longwood at 2 p.m.
