FARMVILLE, Va. – The Presbyterian College women's lacrosse
team battled the Longwood Lancers on Friday afternoon in National Lacrosse
Conference action and fell after a late Longwood run, 17-7.
PC moves to 1-12 on the year and 0-3 in the NLC. Longwood
improves to 2-9 overall and 2-1 in NLC contests.
Longwood held a slim 5-2 lead at halftime and PC pulled
within three early in the second half. The Blue Hose trailed by four late in
the match before the Lancers scored the final six goals of the game to seal the
win.
The two sides tied in saves (12) and turnovers (22) while PC
grabbed 26 ground balls to Longwood's 27.
Catherine Ellis (Charlotte, N.C.) led the Blue Hose with
three goals. Four other PC players found the back of the net as well. Bonnie Corrigan
(Yorktown, Va.) led the team in ground balls, with five, and Jamie Beamish
(Memphis, Tenn.) caused four turnovers and collected four ground balls of her
own.
Goalkeeper Samantha Arey (New Albany, Ohio) took the loss despite 12
saves, a season-high for the freshman.
The Blue Hose scored first on an Ellis tally and tied the
game with 16:12 left in the first half thanks to a goal from Kelsey Rupsch
(Libertyville, Ill.).
The game saw only five goals through the first 15:59 of the
game and two for the rest of the opening half, both belonging to the Lancers.
A free position goal from Megan Schaaf (Ellicott City, Md.)
to open the second period snapped PC's drought and Ellis added her second less
than three minutes later to pull PC within three, 7-4.
Ellis completed her hat-trick by converting a Rupsch assist
with 19:38 to go to keep PC's deficit at three goals.
Longwood scored the next three, but back-to-back goals from
Lauren Lefeber (Waxhaw, N.C.) and Liz Davis (Alpharetta, Ga.) cut Longwood's
lead to three. Lefeber's score came from a Brianne Ward (Cincinnati, Ohio)
assist, her fourth of the season.
From there, the Lancers scored the game's remaining six
goals to pull away for the win. Hannah Riggs paced Longwood with four goals,
seven ground balls and seven draw controls.
PC stays on the road for a visit to Liberty on Sunday at 1
p.m. Live video of the game will be broadcast on the Big South Network.
