CLINTON, S.C. - The Presbyterian College women's soccer team dropped a rare Sunday night contest against the visiting Furman Paladins at Edens Field at Martin Stadium, falling by a 2-0 score.
PC moves to 0-5-0 while Furman improves to 4-1-0.
A pair of Stephanie DeVita goals in the 11th and 34th minutes proved enough for the Paladins to take the win. The first clanged off the crossbar and in while the Paladin tucked the second low and into the right side of the next.
PC bottled up the potent Furman attack for much of the game, including shutting out the visitors in the second half. Alice Blackwell (Marietta, Ga.) stymied several Paladin runs, as did freshman Hannah Gaither (Statesville, N.C.). Sunday's result marks the fewest Furman goals against PC since a 1-0 loss on September 4, 2008.
Blue Hose freshman goalkeeper Sydney Fontenot (Austin, Texas, pictured above) made her first career start and stopped 10 shots, with six coming in the final 45 minutes.
PC's best chance came from a long free kick in the 35th minute. Stephanie Allen (Augusta, Ga.) launched a ball that nearly found its way into the net, but a Furman defender on the goal line kicked the chance away.
Sophie Cobb (Columbia, S.C.) also fired a shot on goal in the 20th minute and Tori Lopez (Snellville, Ga.) added one in the 51st minute.
The Blue Hose stay at home for their next match, a Thursday evening non-conference match against the Jacksonville Dolphins. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
