FARMVILLE, Va. – The Presbyterian College women's soccer
team used a Brittany Whitson (Conyers, Ga.) goal in the second half to force
overtime at Longwood on Saturday, but fell midway through the first extra
period, 2-1.
The match marked the fourth overtime contest for PC (0-9,
0-2 Big South) this season and the first in Big South play. Longwood improves
to 9-3 overall and 0-2 in league action with the win.
Kelsey Pardue ended the match 4:59 into overtime, taking a
ball through traffic and posting a high shot to give Longwood the win.
Trailing 1-0 midway through the second, Whitson collected a
loose ball in the box and fired a shot into the right corner to pull the Blue Hose
even in the 66th minute. The goal gave the junior the first of her
career and sent the game into overtime after a Jordan Broadway (Chapin, S.C.)
save, one of her four on the day.
PC delivered a strong first half, hanging tough with the
Lancers (taking three shots to Longwood's four) and taking a scoreless tie into
halftime.
Longwood took a lead on a Kylie Dyer goal in the 51st
minute as the Lancer finished off a Lindsey Ottavio cross into the box.
Seven different Blue Hose tallied one shot each and four
players tested goalkeeper Kyra Byron with a shot on goal in Whitson, Emily Boggus (Conyers, Ga.) Rebecca Miller (Pauline, S.C.) and Stephanie Allen (Augusta, Ga.), all in the second period.
Boggus, Alice Blackwell (Marietta,
S.C.) and Sophie Cobb (Columbia, S.C.) played all 95 minutes on the defensive end,
holding Longwood to only six shots on goal.
The Blue Hose return home for their first Big South match at
Edens Field at Martin Stadium this season when they host Radford on Thursday
evening. The opening whistle is slated for 7 p.m.
