SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Presbyterian College men's soccer team dropped its road debut to the USC Upstate Spartans on Friday, coming up short by score of 2-0.

PC (1-3-0) tied Upstate (2-1-0) in overall shots on the night with 12 and took nine corner kicks to the Spartans' five.

Upstate used a goal in each half to edge the Blue Hose.

Josh Carter (Anchorage, Alaska, pictured above) led PC with five shots on the night, including four on goal. Jamel Manning (Harrisburg, Pa.) added one as well.

The Spartans struck quickly, scoring in the fifth minute when a PC foul set up an Upstate free kick in the middle of the Blue Hose end. John Kadane's kick bounced out of the box, but the ball went to the foot of Michael Rankin-Byrne and the Spartan fired a low, hard shot into the left side of the net.

The Blue Hose attack sprung into action after the goal. PC created seven corner kick opportunities in the opening half and tallied five shots on goal to the Spartans' three. A late corner kick nearly found its way into the net and Carter tested goalkeeper Dani Alvarado four times in the period.

One of the best saves of the game came from sophomore Tommy Erwood (Leawood, Kan.), who stopped a sure Dylan Hoop goal by blocking the shot on the goal line early in the second half.

Upstate struck again with exactly 30 minutes remaining. A quick goal kick pushed the Upstate counterattack forward and Hoop finished a run into the box with a shot into the far right side of the net, giving the home side a 2-0 lead.

Brett Godwin (Suwanee, Ga.) delivered a solid performance in the back, playing a career-high 85 minutes in the contest. Jon Perry (Boiling Springs, S.C.) also made his first appearance in a collegiate game when he entered the contest in the second half.

Tyler Beadle (Douglasville, Ga.) made three saves on the night.

PC stays on the road with a Saturday evening tilt at Mercer. Kickoff is slated in Macon, Ga., for 6 p.m.
