ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's basketball team dropped a Big South Conference road matchup to the Winthrop Eagles on Saturday afternoon, 78-50.
PC moves to 11-8 overall and 6-2 in the Big South while Winthrop improves to 11-8 and 5-2 in league action. The Blue Hose next host Gardner-Webb on Thursday night at 7 p.m. while Winthrop travels to Coastal Carolina for a Thursday tilt at 7 p.m.
The result marks PC's first conference road loss this season.
Kasey Hobbie (Spring Lake, N.J.) led the Blue Hose with 12 points, going 4-for-5 from three-point range. Dria David (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and Shonda Burnside (Gray Court, S.C.) each chipped in 10 points.
Mariah Pietrowski (Elizabethton, Tenn.) paced the team on the boards with eight rebounds to move her into ninth in program history, with 570 for her career..
The Eagles shot 53.4 percent (31-for-58) from the floor and were led by Dequesha McClanahan's 25 points and 10 assists. Schaquilla Nunn also posted 10 points and 17 rebounds.
Winthrop led 40-25 at halftime before pulling away for the 78-50 final tally.
The two sides slugged it out early to stay close midway through the half. Winthrop pounded the ball inside (with 20 of its first 24 points coming in the paint) while PC made its living from outside the arc, knocking down three straight treys to trail by one at the 9:35 mark.
Winthrop then went on a 15-0 run to open up its largest lead of the half at 16 points. Burnside snapped the streak with six straight of her own before the Eagles capped the half with five points to take a 40-25 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Hobbie connected on her first two shots from distance to give PC a quick lead at the 11:45 mark, but Winthrop's 63.0 percent shooting (17-for-27) gave the Eagles an edge in the opening half.
Winthrop opened the second half on a 12-6 run but PC answered with an 8-2 run of its own to cut the lead to its halftime margin of 15.
From there, however, the Eagles pulled away en route to the final result.
