CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's tennis team
dropped its first match of the 2013 season in a heartbreaker to USC Upstate at
Templeton Tennis Courts on Saturday, 4-3.
PC moves to 0-1 on the season while USC Upstate improves to
2-0.
After dropping the doubles point, the Blue Hose took three
singles matches before the Spartans clinched at the fourth flight.
Singles play began with Lindsay Krause (Roswell, Ga.) winning by
default at the sixth flight. Freshman Haley Elliott (Greenville, S.C.) next
grabbed her first collegiate contest in a match with a convincing 6-1, 6-0 win
over Sarah Vande Berg at No. 5.
Caroline deLoach (Columbia, S.C.) dropped a hard-fought
match at No. 2 to Constanze Kuerten, 6-3, 6-1, before Taylor Cohen pushed past
Greer Ransom (Athens, Ga.) at the top flight, 6-3, 6-3.
Patricia Alves (Campinas, Brazil) followed with another
point for PC in a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Talia Rojas at No. 3.
The day came down to the fourth flight between Lucia Leahy
(Charlotte, N.C.) and Julie Bell. The Spartan took the first set, 6-4, before narrowly
edging Leahy in a nail-biting second set, 7-6 (7-2), to seal the result.
In double play, Bell and Cohen topped Ransom and Krause,
8-0, while Rojas and Kuerten held off Elliott and Alves, 8-3. In the third
flight, deLoach and Kayla Stanford (Canton, Ga.) fell to von Stryk and Vande
Berg, 8-2.
PC next travels to Georgia Southern on Sunday for a 1 p.m.
match.
