COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Presbyterian College men's soccer team fell in a non-conference matchup as the South Carolina Gamecocks pushed past the Blue Hose on Tuesday night, 3-0.
PC moves to 2-6-0 on the year and returns home to host VMI on a Blue Hose soccer Saturday. Men's soccer welcomes VMI at 1 p.m. before women's soccer hosts Liberty at 7 p.m. South Carolina improves to 4-4-2 overall.
South Carolina used three goals in the opening half en route to the win. PC delivered a solid second half, outshooting Carolina by a nine-to-five margin and forcing two corner kicks to the Gamecocks' one.
PC goalkeeper Tanner Osborne (Lexington, S.C.) opened strong, making a must-stop kick save on a shot following a Gamecock corner kick. South Carolina would score first on a corner kick a few minutes later when Mahamoudou Kaba deflected Ryan Arambula's lofted ball. Midway through the first, South Carolina led, 1-0.
The Gamecocks scored their second of the night a little over 10 minutes later on another Kaba goal from a corner kick. Osborne made an initial save, but the ball bounced high to the defender and he knocked it in to give the home side a 2-0 lead.
Osborne soon after made a diving save to keep another goal out of the net, one of his six of the first half.
South Carolina found the back of the net on a corner kick in the 40th minute. PC knocked away the kick but the ball eventually found its way to Eli Lake, whose shot deflected off of a defending Matthew McManis (Greenwood, S.C.) and in.
Jonny Archer (Charlotte, N.C.) took over in goal 10 minutes into the second half and made three saves to keep the home side scoreless down the stretch.
PC's best chance of the half came with 12 minutes left on a corner kick. The ball bounced out to Brett Godwin (Suwanee, Ga.) who launched a shot from the top of the box that McManis attempted to deflect. A Gamecock defender blocked the chance and the ball skittered to Cade Crow (Liberty, Mo.), who fired a shot that flew inches wide of the far post.
Crow led PC with three shots. John Speed (Decatur, Ga.) and McManis each fired a shot on goal.
