ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's soccer team used the first career goal from Alison Stelling (Greenwood, S.C.) and a sparkling defensive effort to end the regular season with a 1-0 road shutout over the Winthrop Eagles on Tuesday night.
PC ends the regular season at 9-8-0 overall and 6-5-0 in the Big South, the most overall wins since 2003 and the most-ever Big South wins in a season for the Blue Hose. Winthrop falls to 11-5-1 on the year and 7-4-0 in the Big South. PC will take the No. 7 seed into the Big South Conference Women's Soccer Championship and play at No. 2 Liberty on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the quarterfinals.
The victory marked PC's first ever over Winthrop in the eighth all-time meeting.
Tied 0-0 with 9:40 gone in the second half, the Blue Hose broke through for the game's only goal. Kelly Kozera (Rome, Ga.) headed a shot off of goalkeeper Amelia Henderson that bounced to junior Alison Stelling, who buried the chance to put PC in front for the first and last time on the night.
The play gave Stelling her first career goal and Kozera her second assist of the season.
PC's defense and goalkeeping handled the rest. The back line allowed Winthrop—who entered the match averaging nearly 17 shots per game—just seven shots and only one net. Five Blue Hose played all 90 minutes including defenders Stephanie Allen (Augusta, Ga.), Emily McCord (Asheville, N.C.) and Hannah Gaither (Statesville, N.C.) along with midfielders Christy Schofer (Powder Springs, Ga.) and Brittany Whitson (Conyers, Ga.).
Blue Hose goalkeepers Jordan Broadway (Chapin, S.C.) and Sydney Fontenot (Austin, Texas) each played a half for their third combined shutout in the last four matches. Broadway made the side's only save on Grace Radler in the first half.
The PC attack pressed all night, outshooting Winthrop 13 to seven and firing eight shots on goal, led by Schofer's three. The visitors forced Henderson to stop five shots in the second half without surrendering any of their own.
