DELAND, Fla. – The Presbyterian College lacrosse team roared
to its first win of the season on Tuesday night, rolling past Stetson in a
decisive 17-7 victory.
PC moves to 1-5 on the season while Stetson falls to 0-5.
The Blue Hose next take on Louisville in Atlanta, Ga. Opening draw is slated
for 5 p.m.
The Blue Hose peppered Stetson with 40 shots on the night
and outscored the Hatters 10-4 in the second half. Lauren Lefeber's (Waxhaw,
N.C.) career-high six goals and six draw controls paced the visitors while
Catherine Ellis (Charlotte, N.C.) added four goals and an assist. Jaime Beamish
(Memphis, Tenn.) provided three goals and two assists as well.
Bonnie Corrigan (Yorktown, Va.) collected four ground balls
and Bridget Hogan (Charlotte, N.C.) stopped 10 shots for her first career win.
The Blue Hose outdrew Stetson, 16-10, and converted 21 of 23 clear attempts.
PC opened with a strong first half, taking a 7-3 lead into
halftime.
Kelsey Gilbert opened the scoring by netting Stetson's first
goal 4:40 after the opening draw. The play gave Stetson a 1-0 lead.
The Blue Hose responded with three straight goals, beginning
on an Ellis free position goal at the 21:19 mark.
Lefeber gave PC the lead by slipping one past goalkeeper
Whitney Meyers just 30 seconds later. Beamish capped the run with a tally at
18:32 as PC led, 3-1.
Stetson pulled within one before the Blue Hose scored two in
a row for a three-goal lead. Maggie Richardson (Maplewood, N.J.) took a Corrigan
feed and scored her third of the season. Brianne Ward (Cincinnati, Ohio)
followed by finishing a Liz Davis (Alpharetta, Ga.) setup for a 5-3 advantage.
Stetson again answered on a goal before PC responded with
two. Beamish struck from the free position and Lefeber scored her second less
than a minute later to give the Blue Hose a 7-3 lead at the break.
The offense kept rolling in the second half. The two teams
swapped goals to open the period before the Blue Hose rattled off six straight
goals, including two each from Lefeber and Ellis. Kelsey Rupsch (Libertyville,
Ill.) and Maddie Seiloff (Marietta, Ga.) found the net as well to give PC a 14-4
lead with 18:25 left.
Stetson came up with two goals, breaking a drought that spanned 11:20, before Lefeber potted her
fifth at the 5:22 mark. Lefeber and Beamish iced the game with goals inside the final minute to
seal the win.
