CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's lacrosse team dropped a Big South Conference match on Monday evening, falling to the visiting Winthrop Eagles by a 21-12 margin.
PC moves to 2-10 on the year and 0-2 in the Big South while Winthrop improves to 8-5 overall and 2-1 in league play. The Blue Hose next play Liberty away on Friday at 3 p.m. and Winthrop travels to High Point for a Friday matchup at 6 p.m.
Lauren Lefeber (Waxhaw, N.C.) and Catherine Ellis (Charlotte, N.C.) each scored three goals for the Blue Hose while Maddie Seiloff (Marietta, Ga.) added two goals and an assist for three points.
Megan Wallenhorst led Winthrop with five goals and four assists for nine points. Shannon Gallagher matched Wallenhorst with five goals.
PC won the draw control battle, 18 to 16, and took 16 shots to Winthrop's 18 in the second half.
The Blue Hose scored the first two goals of the game for an early lead. Megan Schaaf (Ellicott City, Md.) put PC on the board 1:06 into the match three and a half minutes before Ellis finished off a Seiloff feed to put PC ahead by two, 2-0.
The Eagles responded by scoring the next seven, including three from the free position and two from Wallenhorst.
Ellis scored her 27th of the season to halt the run and Lefeber followed by converting from the free position to get PC within three with 1:54 remaining in the period. Gallagher scored one more for Winthrop before the half ended as the Eagles took an 8-4 advantage into the halftime break.
The Eagles started the second half on a 3-0 run before Seiloff converted a free-position shot at the 24:32 mark. The two sides swapped one goal each for the game's next seven scores as Lefeber, Brianne Ward (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Seiloff found the scoreboard for PC.
Two Winthrop goals put the Eagles ahead by eight, but Lefeber potted her third of the game with 11:45 left. Kelsey Rupsch (Libertyville, Ill.) followed after a Wallenhorst goal to make it 17-10.
Three Winthrop goals gave the visitors a 10-goal lead with 1:17 left. Ellis stopped the run again thanks to a Beamish assist and Rupsch scored her second of the game 11 seconds later. Winthrop capped its scoring with an Alyssa Blevins goal as time expired.
Bridget Hogan (Charlotte, N.C.) made seven saves for the Blue Hose and Padgett Harrington (Apex, N.C.) stopped two shots in relief.
