CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's soccer match appeared headed for overtime on Friday night, but the visiting Wofford Terriers scored with 1:10 before the final whistle to edge the Blue Hose in a heartbreaker, 2-1.
PC's winning streak stops at three as the team moves to 3-3-0 on the year. The Blue Hose hit the road next to open Big South Conference play on Wednesday at Radford at 7 p.m. Wofford improves to 3-2-1.
Tied at 1-1 with just over a minute to go in regulation, Wofford's Maggie Bosley chipped a ball over the back line to Mary Beth Bleekrode. The Terrier forward then lofted a shot that bounced into the net to put Wofford ahead for the eventual final tally, 2-1.
PC tied the game earlier in the half on a corner kick in the 70th minute. Stephanie Allen's (Augusta, Ga.) kick found Sara Simpson (Columbia, S.C.) in front of the net, whose header went off the crossbar. Defender Emily McCord (Asheville, N.C.) moved up on the kick and her position helped her head in the rebound for her first collegiate goal. The score pulled PC even with 21 minutes to go, 1-1.
Wofford drew first blood in the 18th minute. Chloe Brackett began a run as soon as Bleekrode lifted a long ball into the PC in and Brackett converted the cross into the left side of the net for the game's first goal.
The Blue Hose created several dangerous opportunities in the second half. Brittany Whitson (Conyers, Ga.) nearly stuffed home a rebound chance only to see a Terrier stop the shot at the goal line and Emily Boggus (Conyers, Ga.) pushed a shot high and wide on a chance against Wofford goalkeeper Kimberly Cohn.
Cohn made two saves on the night, as did PC goalkeeper Jordan Broadway (Chapin, S.C.). Broadway takes her first loss of the year and moves to 3-1-0.
McCord and Tori Lopez (Snellville, Ga.) took two shots each on the night. Bleekrode led all players with four.
PC's offense began to click in the second half, matching Wofford for shots 7-7 in the period. The Blue Hose back line also turned away a number of chances, led by McCord, Hannah Gaither (Statesville, N.C.) and Allen.
