CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College men's soccer team mounted a late rally against the visiting Mercer Bears on Sunday, but the Bears held on against the surging Blue Hose for a 2-1 victory.
PC moves to 2-5-0 overall and will travel to South Carolina for a Tuesday match at 7 p.m. Mercer improves to 2-7-0 on the year.
Trailing 2-0 late in the match, the Blue Hose launched an offensive that lasted the final 20 minutes and resulted in Matthew McManis's (Greenwood, S.C.) first collegiate goal on Mason Lewis's (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) first collegiate assist.
Spencer Marks (Woodstock, Ga.) began the push with a header on frame in the 74th minute. Ian Dempsey (Madison, Ala.) tested goalkeeper Greg Ranjitsingh shortly after before McManis broke through in the 83rd minute to cut Mercer's lead in half.
The Blue Hose forced two game-tying opportunities in the 89th minute with a pair of corner kicks. Cade Crow (Liberty, Mo.) tried for a goal with a header off of Ignacio Monchetti's (Montevideo, Uruguay) corner kick, but Ranjitsingh made the save 43 seconds before the final whistle and Mercer took the win.
PC goalkeeper Tanner Osborne (Lexington, S.C.) made three stops in his first start of the season.
Mercer's David Mertaugh put the Bears ahead in the 31st minute on an assist from Ehjayson Henry to give the Bears a 1-0 halftime lead. Seven minutes after the break, Juan Jose Morales knocked in a shot from Joey Heavner and Ashani Samuels to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.
The Blue Hose outshot the Bears in the second half, seven to four, and forced four Mercer saves in the final 45 minutes.
Brett Godwin (Suwanee, Ga.) played all 90 minutes in the effort. Nico Fazio (Roswell, Ga.) and Monchetti also each tallied a shot on goal.
