Blue Hose Softball Falls Late to Spartans

The Presbyterian College softball team scored three runs the first three innings but it was UNCG that came out on top at the end, collecting five over the final three to take the 5-4 win in action this afternoon at Carolina Stadium in Columbia, S.C., as part of the Carolina Classic.

PC drops to 0-2, while SC improves to 2-1 after the early season contest. UNCG improves to 1-2, while the Blue Hose drop to 0-4.  PC opens the 2014 home season Wednesday, Feb. 12, against Georgia State.  First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 2 p.m.

Kensley Loudermelk started the game, going three innings and giving up three runs off six hits, while striking out three.  Sydney Seigler came in relief and surrendered two runs off four hits in three innings of work to pick up the loss.  Raeanne Hanks pitched a complete game for UNCG, striking out 11, while giving up two earned runs and six hits for the win.

PC collected six hits, with Jill McLean coming away with a team-leading two.  Miranda Rogers posted one hit, but paced the Blue Hose in RBI with three.  UNCG, which had 10 hits in the game, recorded two hits from Lindsay Thomas and Tatiana Alcala, while getting two RBI from Katelyn Bedwell.

McLean started off strong for PC, taking the second pitch of the game to left for a game opening triple.  She scored three batters later off a Rogers' RBI ground out.

A two-RBI single from Rogers drove in McLean and Shelby Petik in the top of the third to give the Blue Hose a 3-0 lead.

UNCG tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with a RBI double from Tory Wright, a RBI single from Toni MacReynolds and a Dominique Madruga RBI fielder's choice.

After a scoreless fifth inning, PC went back up with a 4-3 lead.  Jordan Ashley led off the inning with a double.  Jennifer Marshall entered the game as a pinch runner and, after advancing to third on a wild pitch, came home off a passed ball.

The Spartans rallied again, this time in the bottom of the sixth off a two-RBI double by Bedwell to give UNCG the lead back at 5-4.  The Blue Hose put the tying run at first with two outs in the seventh but can't covert as the Spartans come back for the one-run win.
