Lacrosse's Rally Comes Up Short Against Saint Francis, 17-14

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's lacrosse team scored four of the final five goals in its Friday home match against Saint Francis, but the rally couldn't lead the Blue Hose past Saint Francis as the Red Flash hung on to win, 17-14.

PC moves to 2-1 on the year and stays at home to host Cincinnati on Sunday at 1 p.m. Saint Francis improves to 1-3.

Saint Francis held on to an 8-6 halftime lead and at one point led 14-8 before the Blue Hose narrowed the gap and ran out of time.

Brianne Ward (Cincinnati, Ohio) led PC with three goals and two assists for five points. Jess Goergen (Fayetteville, Ga.) and Catherine Ellis (Charlotte, N.C.) added three goals each while Bonnie Corrigan (Yorktown, Va.) posted team-highs with three assists, five ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Ward led off the scoring and Margaret Richardson (Maplewood, N.J.) found the back of the net on a Corrigan feed before Saint Francis went ahead, 3-2. Ellis tied the game at 3 and PC had to chase the Red Flash for the rest of the half following two more Saint Francis goals.

A Maddie Seiloff (Marietta, Ga.) goal pulled PC within one at 5-4 and Goergen potted her first of the day at the 11:02 mark. Saint Francis led 8-5 with 10:01 left in the half and PC held the Red Flash scoreless for the rest of the period. Seiloff scored her second of the period to make it 8-6 Saint Francis at the break.

Goergen scored 3:44 after halftime to cut Saint Francis's lead to 8-7, but the Red Flash then notched three straight to go up by four. A Corrigan goal halted the run before another three straight from Saint Francis extended the visitors' lead to 14-8.

PC clawed back, beginning with Richardson finishing a Goergen pass for a goal and then finding Ward on a slick feed in front for a 14-10 score. Saint Francis took the two back, but the Blue Hose then scored four straight goals while holding the Red Flash without one of their own for 10:49. Goergen, Ellis, Ward and Ellis again pulled PC within two with 1:13 remaining. Unfortunately for PC, the team could not complete the comeback and Saint Francis potted another with 1:02 left en route to the 17-14 win.

Rachel Larson led Saint Francis with six goals and Danielle Conwell tallied three goals and three assists.

Bridget Hogan (Charlotte, N.C.) played 37:06 in net for PC and made six saves.

PC won the ground ball battle, 22-20, and committed 21 turnovers to Saint Francis's 24.
