CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's lacrosse team dropped its 2014 home finale to the Campbell Camels on Senior Day Saturday, falling 21-12 at Martin Stadium.
PC moves to 4-11 on the year and 0-5 in the Big South. The Blue Hose next face Coastal Carolina on Friday at 6 p.m. in Conway. Campbell improves to 7-7 on the year and 2-4 in League action and next plays at High Point on Monday at 6 p.m.
Campbell took a 17-5 lead after the opening half before PC outscored the visitors 7-4 in the second half.
Senior Megan Schaaf (Ellicott City, Md.) led PC with three goals and two assists for five points. Eight different Blue Hose found the back of the net, including two each from senior Kelsey Rupsch (Libertyville, Ill.) and Maddie Seiloff (Marietta, Ga.). Freshman Maura Talvacchia (Moorestown, N.J.) led PC in ground balls (five) and caused turnovers (four) while matching a team-high in draw controls (three).
Erica Hitch scored six goals and notched two assists to lead Campbell.
The first two goals of the game belonged to Campbell before the Blue Hose responded with three straight. Schaaf opened the PC scoring at 24:21 on a Seiloff assist before Liz Bedell (Londonderry, N.H.) notched her second of the season by streaking in and finishing a Ward pass. Rupsch capped the run with a seeing-eye shot that beat goalie Brittany Kincer low for the goal.
Four straight Campbell goals—two from Erica Hitch—put the visitors up 6-3 through the first 10 minutes. A Seiloff free position goal cut the gap to two, but the Camels answered with five straight for an 11-4 advantage.
Bonnie Corrigan (Yorktown, Va.) snapped Campbell's run by converting a Schaaf assist with 4:54 to go for her 10th of the season. From there, however, the final six goals of the half belonged to Campbell for a 17-5 halftime lead.
Campbell's April Reinhart scored the first goal of the half before PC ripped off five unanswered. Rupsch tallied her fourth of the year on a free-position score before Jess Goergen (Fayetteville, Ga.) notched one a little over two minutes later. Ward followed at the 17:37 as Schaaf and Erin Murphy (Huntersville, N.C.) followed to pull PC back within eight, 18-10.
The Camels began to work the clock while scoring two more for a 20-10 lead with 6:13 to go. Schaaf scored her 14th of the year with 3:25 to go. Erica Hitch tallied her final goal of the game in the closing minute and Seiloff also scored for a 21-12 final.
PC forced 13 Camels turnovers in the second half and held the visitors to 1-for-7 on free position shot on the day. Senior PC goalkeeper Bridget Hogan also made eight saves in the first half and nine on the afternoon.
Prior to the match, PC honored seniors Catherine Ellis (Charlotte, N.C.) Madeline Taghon (Columbus, Ohio), Schaaf, Ward, Rupsch and Hogan.
