ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Presbyterian College lacrosse team fell in the final game of the 2014 regular season on Sunday, dropping a 23-7 result against Winthrop at Eagle Field.
PC wraps the regular season at 4-13 overall and 0-7 in the Big South Conference. The Blue Hose will make their first-ever appearance in the week's Big South Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship presented by Musco Lighting on Wednesday at No. 1 High Point at 7 p.m. Winthrop improves to 7-10 on the year and 4-3 in League play.
Maura Talvacchia set a PC season-high with nine ground balls in the effort, the third-most ever in a PC game. The freshman also caused a game-high five turnovers. Jess Goergen (Fayetteville, Ga.) led PC on offense and tied a career-high with three goals against the Eagles and Maddie Seiloff (Marietta, Ga.) added a pair as well. Goalkeeper Bridget Hogan (Charlotte, N.C.) made eight saves on the day, including five in the second half.
Winthrop's Shannon Gallagher led all players with six goals and three assists.
The Eagles went up 2-0 in the first three minutes before Seiloff potted PC's first on a Brianne Ward (Cincinnati, Ohio) assist. Three Winthrop goals followed and Goergen snapped the run on a free-position attempt for her first of the day.
Two more 3-1 Winthrop runs gave the home side an 11-4 lead with PC goals from Seiloff and Goergen . Abagail Blevins and Gallagher scored for the Eagles to end the half around Ward's team-leading 29th goal of the season.
Goergen kicked off the second half by completing her hat trick with a Bonnie Corrigan (Yorktown, Va.) assist. Corrigan netted her 11th of the year on a Ward helper at the 20:22 mark to pull PC within six, 15-7. From there, however, Winthrop held PC in check and added eight goals for the 23-7 victory.
The Blue Hose edged the Eagles in turnovers, 18 to 19, and went 13-for-15 on clears.
