CLINTON, S.C.- A penalty kick scored by Radford in the second overtime period handed the Presbyterian College women's soccer team a 1-0 Big South Conference opening loss on Wednesday night at Martin Stadium.
Radford's Jordan Lundin was awarded a PK with 7:39 on the clock in the second overtime period after a Blue Hose handball inside the box. Lundin chipped the ball into the goal on the right side to seal the deal for the Highlanders and give them a 1-0 record to start conference play. The goal was Lundin's third of the season.
The visiting Highlanders (4-4-1 overall, 1-0-0 BS) held a 20-12 shot advantage over the Blue Hose (3-4-0 overall, 0-1-0 BS), as well as a 10-1 corner kick advantage. Radford led in shots 8-2 in the first half, but the Blue Hose had a strong offensive push and played them evenly in shots 8-8 for the second half.
Sarah Yoss (Peachtree City, Ga./Starr's Mills H.S.) and Keri O'Neill (Peachtree City, Ga./Sandy Creek H.S.) led the offensive effort for the Blue Hose with three shots each. Kristen Peagler (Lithonia, Ga./Southwest DeKalb H.S.) and Hannah Gaither (Statesville, N.C./Statesville H.S.) had two shots apiece for Presbyterian.
In goal, Sydney Fontenot (Austin, Texas/James Bowie H.S.) made seven saves and allowed only the penalty kick to take the loss for PC. For Radford, Katie McCormick recorded four saves to earn the shutout win.
The Blue Hose will continue Big South Conference play on Saturday Sept. 27 when they host UNC Asheville for a 2 p.m. matchup at Martin Stadium.
