PC Lacrosse Wins Big Over Gardner-Webb, 18-5

CLINTON, S.C.- The Presbyterian College women's lacrosse team opened the game with six unanswered goals and closed out the match with five straight goals to push past Gardner-Webb on Thursday afternoon and grab an 18-5 victory at Old Bailey Stadium. 

PC picks up its first win of the season as the team goes to 1-5. The Blue Hose are next in action on Friday, March 20 when the team hosts Mercer at 4 p.m. The Runnin' Bulldogs drop to 0-6 on the year with a contest also against Mercer on Sunday, March 15 at 2 p.m. 

Katy Richardson (Lake Worth, Fla.) led the team in points with a season-high four goals and three assists. Lauren Schaaf (Ellicott City, Md.) also scored four goals in the win.

Jess Goergen (Fayetteville, Tenn.), Claire Frase (Fort Mill, S.C.), and Grace MacMillan (Wooster, Oh.) notched two goals apiece for the Blue Hose, while Kathleen Gerrits (Lake Worth, Fla.), Maggie Richardson (Maplewood, N.J.), Ashley Wren (Murfreesboro, Tenn.), and Liz Bedell (Londonderry, N.H.) scored one goal each. Gerrits was also credited with her first assist of the year, and Frase also won five draw controls for the Blue Hose. 

Lee-Ann Salim (East Islip, N.Y.) and Sophia Cuzzupe (Newtown Square, Pa.) split time in goal for PC. Salim started and played the full 30 first-half minutes, allowing just two goals. Cuzzupe made six saves in her second-half shift in goal, allowing three goals.

Schaaf scored the first three goals of the game for the Blue Hose, with two assisted by Katy Richardson, to get the team out to an early lead with 23:38 to play in the half. Richardson scored a goal of her own just minutes later on a free position shot to make it a 4-0 Blue Hose lead.

Frase and Goergen scored back-to-back goals for PC to make it 6-0 with 14:54 left in the first half. 

Gardner-Webb got on the board with 13:16 to play when Monique Martin scored her third goal of the season for the Runnin' Bulldogs. 

Katy Richardson scored her second goal of the game with 8:27 to play and provided the assist on MacMillan's goal just one minute later.Gerrits tallied her first career goal with 6:23 left in the half to give the Blue Hose a 9-1 advantage.

Destiny Mead notched her third goal of the year with 37 seconds on the clock on a pass from Emma Rose to give Gardner-Webb its second score of the game, but MacMillan scored again with eight seconds left in the first half to give the hosts a 10-2 halftime lead.

Lindsey Lippert scored the first point of the second half for the Runnin' Bulldogs on Emma Rose's second assist of the game with 29:10 left in the contest. 

Katy Richardson completed the hat trick on another free position shot with 28:28 to play to make the score 11-3. Amanda Steinmueller notched her fifth goal of the year on a pass from Monique Martin with 27:14 left in the game.

Frase and Schaaf scored on back-to-back free position shots to give the Blue Hose a 13-4 advantage. Cassidy McDowell notched her second goal of her career on a pass from Emma Rose with 17:33 left on the clock. The assist was Rose's third of the game. 

PC closed out the game with five straight goals. Katy Richardson recorded her fourth of the game with 16:23 to play. Goergen scored her second goal of the contest on a free position shot to make the score 15-5 with 12:56 left. 

Wren notched her first career goal as a Blue Hose with 8:11 to play in the match, followed by Maggie Richardson with her second goal of the season with 1:58 left, and Bedell with her first score of the season just seconds later.
