CLINTON, S.C.- The Presbyterian College women's lacrosse team was overpowered by Jacksonville on Sunday afternoon at Old Bailey Stadium, 22-7.
With the loss, PC falls to 2-6 overall. The Blue Hose will play at Delaware State on Saturday, March 28 at 1 p.m. before opening Big South Conference play on Saturday, April 4 at home against Winthrop. Jacksonville improves to 8-2 on the year with the victory over PC.
Claire Frase (Fort Mill, S.C.) led the Blue Hose with a team-high three goals in the loss. Lauren Schaaf (Ellicott City, Md.) tallied two goals and one assist. Alexandra Cole (Duluth, Ga.) had one goal and two assists and Cassie Watters (Chapel Hill, N.C.) added a goal for the Blue Hose.
Cole won a team-high four draw controls and Maura Talvacchia (Moorestown, N.J.) had three caused turnovers.
Sophia Cuzzupe (Newtown Square, Pa.) got the start in goal for PC. She made four saves in the first half. Lee-Ann Salim (East Islip, N.Y.) played in goal the entire second half and also made four saves.
Danielle Della Rocca led the Dolphins with seven goals and two assists. Sally Holbert and Kelly Lacy both had two goals and one assist apiece. 11 other players scored individual goals for Jacksonville in the win.
Holly Ventimiglia and Kelsey Wiglesworth had four assists each for the Dolphins. Asia Moore recorded two saves in goal during her 30 minutes of action in the first half. Mariah Cudlipp and Julie Summers also played in goal but did not make any stops.
The Dolphins got out to a quick 4-0 lead in the opening seven minutes of action. Della Rocca recorded three of her seven goals during this time and Ventimiglia provided the assist on all three scores of Della Rocca's. Holbert also scored the first of her two goals in the game.
Cole put the Blue Hose on the board with 21:34 to play in the opening half on her third goal of the season.
Della Rocca struck again for the Dolphins when she scored back-to-back goals and Ventimiglia recorded a goal to make the score 7-1 with 19:03 left in the first half.
Schaaf scored for PC on a free position shot for her tenth goal of the season to pull the Blue Hose within five, 7-2. Jacksonville scored four unanswered goals, though, as the team began to pull away to make the score 11-2 with 8:28 to play in the half.
Schaaf scored again for the Blue Hose, but the Dolphins scored back-to-back goals within 20 seconds to make it 13-3 with 4:22 to play.
PC closed out the half with two straight goals by Frase. Cole provided the go-ahead pass for both scores. PC trailed Jacksonville 13-5 at halftime.
The Dolphins opened the second half with eight unanswered goals to take a 21-5 lead. Watters scored her second goal of the year with 9:41 to play on a pass from Schaaf to break the scoring drought for the Blue Hose.
Kirstin Purdy tallied her first goal of the year on a pass from Ventimiglia with just under eight minutes to play, but Frase scored once more for the Blue Hose to complete the hat trick and bring the final score to 22-7.
