Strong Second Half Leads Liberty Past PC

CLINTON, S.C.- The Presbyterian College women's lacrosse team hung with Liberty for the first half, but the Flames outscored the Blue Hose 12-1 during the second half to earn the 23-9 win in Big South Conference action on Sunday afternoon at Martin Stadium on PC's "Senior Day." 

Seniors Miriam Collins (Woodstock, Ga.) and Maggie Richardson (Maplewood, N.J.) were accompinied by their parents and honored before the game for their accomplishments and dedication to the program. 

With the loss, PC drops to 3-10 overall and 0-4 in Big South action. The Flames improve to 6-8 on the year and 4-0 in conference play. 

Katy Richardson (Lake Worth, Fla.) led the Blue Hose with her four goals in the loss. Collins scored two goals in her final home game, while Maggie Richardson, Claire Frase (Fort Mill, S.C.) and Jess Goergen (Fayetteville, Ga.) all recorded individual goals.

Alexandra Cole (Duluth, Ga.) had a trio of assists, while Frase dished out one. 

Lee-Ann Salim (East Islip, N.Y.) made 14 saves in goal for the Blue Hose. She also had a team-high five ground balls. Maggie Richardson came up with four ground balls, three draw controls, and three caused turnovers for PC, while Maura Talvacchia (Moorestown, N.J.) and Amanda Lindsey (Peachtree City, Ga.) had three ground balls each. Cole, Katy Richardson, and Taylor Johnson (Kennesaw, Ga.) all won three draw controls. 

Katy Pridemore and Morgan Becker led Liberty with seven and six goals, respectfully. Nina Dunay scored three goals, while Kallie Britton and Michaela Rich scored two. Alyssa Kidder, Courtney Brown, and Paige Britton all registered single goals for the Flames. 

Becker had a team-high three assists, while Kallie Britton and Dunay had two apiece, and Kidder and Rich gave out one assist each. 

Juliann Elmer recorded seven saves in goal for the Flames. Colleen Ekert had a game-high nine ground balls and seven caused turnovers. Becker won five draw controls, while Erin Cornell and Dunay won four apiece. 

PC's seniors scored the first two goals of the game as Collins and Maggie Richardson scored on free position shots. 

Becker scored on back-to-back goals for Liberty to tie it up 2-2 with 20:37 to play in the opening half. Kallie Britton gave the guests a one-goal lead on her score, but Collins tied it up again at 16:58. 

Pridemore tallied her first goal of the game on a pass from Dunay, but Katy Richardson made the score 4-4 with her goal on a free position shot with 12:12 on the clock. 

The Flames went on to score the next four goals to slightly pull away from PC. Frase scored for the Blue Hose to end a six-minute dry spell and make the score 8-5. 

Kallie Britton scored for Liberty on a free position shot, but the Blue Hose responded with back-to-back goals by Katy Richardson to bring it to 9-7 with 2:44 to play. 

The Flames responded with two straight goals of their own, but Katy Richardson scored her fourth and final goal of the contest with 22 seconds on the clock on a pass from Cole to make the score 11-8 at halftime.

PC opened the second half with a quick goal scored by Goergen on an assist by Cole to cut it to two points, but that would be the closest that the Blue Hose would get, as Liberty would score the next 12 goals to close out the conference game.
