MACON, Ga. – Lauren Schaaf netted five goals, but was not enough as the Presbyterian College women's lacrosse team was edged by Mercer, 10-9, Sunday afternoon at Five Star Stadium.
The Blue Hose feel to 1-3 on the season, while the Bears went to 1-3 on the year. PC hosts Stetson on 3 p.m. Saturday at Old Martin Stadium.
Schaaf (Ellicott City, Md.) led all scorers with five goals on seven shots and collected five ground balls, while Katy Richardson (Lake Worth, Fla.) provided three assists and a goal on five shots.
Lindsey Zeltwanger and Erica Coyne led the Mercer offense with three goals each. Zeltwanger also provided two assists on four shots and collected four draw controls, while Coyne took four shots.
Coyne started the scoring with a goal less than a minute in the first minute before Schaaf netted back-to-back goals and gave PC a 2-1 lead nine minutes into the game. The two teams exchanged goals and evened the game at 8-8.
Schaaf completed her hat trick, and 11th goal of the season, that gave the Blue Hose a 5-4 lead. Richardson found the back of the net before halftime and put PC up 6-4 heading into the locker room.
Mercer started the second half with three-straight goals before Schaaf tied the game at 7-7 on an assist from Richardson. The Bears scored two more before Schaaf completed her scoring with another assist from Richardson and pulled PC within one at 9-8.
Mercer netted one more before Kathleen Gerrits (Lake Worth, Fla.) ended the scoring with her third goal of the season.
Sophia Cuzzupe (Newtown Square, Pa.) gathered four saves and four ground balls for the Blue Hose.
The Blue Hose outshot the Bears 25-17 and held a 37-30 advantage on ground balls.
