CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's tennis had its unbeaten streak snapped on Thursday afternoon, as Charlotte (2-0) defeated the Blue Hose (5-1), 7-0, at the Templeton Tennis Courts. The Blue Hose return to the courts on Saturday for a home match against Georgia Southern at 10 a.m.
The 49ers claimed the doubles point by taking two of the three matches. Charlotte's Tyler Baker and Macy Vonderschmidt defeated Brittany Nuttall and Nicole Croxton, 6-2, at No. 3 and Tai Martin and Victoria Pahlett followed with a 6-3 win over PC's Demi Henschel and Caroline Ferrari at No. 1 to clinch the point. Tracy Johnson and Claire-Mitchell Andrews were tied at 5-5 at No. 2 but the match went unfinished.
Charlotte then clinched the match with strong play on the singles side. Baker earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 4 to make it 2-0 until Martin earned a victory at No. 1, 6-3, 6-1, over Ferrari to make it 3-0 for the 49ers. Andrews battled in set two against Charlotte's Fleur Holtkamp but came up short, falling 6-1, 6-4, as the 49ers clinched its second straight victory.
Freshmen Johnson and Croxton each dropped the first singles matches of their respective careers at No. 2 and 6, respectively. Charlotte closed it out with a win at No. 3, as Henschel dropped a competitive match to Vonderschmidt, 6-3, 6-4.
The loss was PC's first of the season after getting off to the best start in the program's Division I history at 5-0.
