ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's tennis team recorded its first-ever victory in the Big South Championship on Thursday, knocking off the No. 4 seed Charleston Southern, 4-2, in the quarterfinal round at the Rock Hill Tennis Center. The Blue Hose will now face top-seeded Winthrop on Friday at 10 a.m. in the semifinals.
PC took the early lead by clinching the doubles point. Tracy Johnson and Caroline Ferrari teamed up for a 6-1 win at No. 2 and Beth Taylor and Brittany Nuttall followed with a 6-2 win at No. 3, putting the Blue Hose in front 1-0.
CSU tied it at 1-1 with a win at No. 1 singles but Johnson countered with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 to put PC back in front 2-1. The Bucs got a win at No.5 to retie the match, before Katie Thompson finished off a three-set win at No. 6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, putting PC one point shy of clinching. It was freshman Samantha Calais that was able to finish it off, recording a 7-6 (7-1), 4-6, 6-2 victory at No. 3 to give the Blue Hose the 4-3 win.
PC will make its first appearance in the semifinals on Friday, as it faces the host and No. 1 seed Winthrop. The Eagles went unbeaten in Big South play in the regular season and defeated Longwood, 4-0, in the first match of the tournament on Thursday morning.
