CLINTON, S.C. – In what will be the second-to-last appearance of the regular season with Martin Stadium as a backdrop, the Presbyterian College women's soccer team returns to Clinton this weekend for an evening date with Winthrop which will simultaneously serve as the 2022 edition of Senior Day. Before the game's opening kick, PC will honor four special seniors that have contributed a great deal to the program under the tutelage of longtime head coach
Brian Purcell.
Sydni Dachs,
Carolay Ospina,
Megan Wilson, and
Kori Lawrence have formed a dependable quartet of the past four years with the PC program (five in the case of the latter), responsible for 19 victories since their freshman stints and several program-firsts, including the most ever Big South wins in a single season during the abbreviated Spring '21 campaign.
Turning their attention to the Eagles after coming up short in a spirited effort against a very deep Gardner-Webb unit in Boiling Springs on Wednesday, the Blue Hose will look to stand their ground against a Winthrop squad still in search of their first conference victory. First touch at PC's house is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., broadcasted by ESPN+.
WHEN: Saturday, October 15
WHERE: Edens Field at Martin Stadium
TIME: 7:00 p.m.
RECORDS: Presbyterian (0-11-3, 0-5-1 Big South) – Winthrop (3-6-2, 0-4-1 Big South)
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT:
Fizzling out somewhat after a 3-1 start to the semester, the Eagles have either salvaged a tie or ended up with an outright loss in their last seven appearances since a 7-0 beatdown over South Carolina State back on September 7. Four of those contests have seen Winthrop blanked on the scoreboard, most recently taking a 3-1 setback to Gardner-Webb in Rock Hill before Wednesday's intended matchup with High Point was pushed back due to Mother Nature interference.
As both teams attempt a final push before the four-team Big South Tournament bracket begins in early November, the Eagles will look to return to their early-season consistency, able to continually give themselves chances to win behind a defensive core that has given up more than one goal just four times in 11 matches. Altogether, Winthrop and PC have seen nine matches between them decided by a single goal.
Last weekend's loss to Gardner-Webb was one of those rare occasions where the Eagles let more than one boot slip past them, able to score in the 49
th minute (the seventh goal of the year from junior Annabel Thomas) but not before already falling behind 2-0 that slid into an eventual 3-1 final. Thomas ranks second in the entire conference in total goals, as the Blue Hose just finished taking on the league-leader (and NCAA leader, as a matter of fact) in that category only two days ago, successfully preventing Maddie Turlington of GWU from improving on the nation's best 18-goal output.
LAST TIME OUT:
While Turlington may have been held off the board, the Gardner-Webb offense was simply too dynamic to keep quiet as a whole for the full 90 minutes, able to finish a 2-1 win over Presbyterian in the middle of the week by scoring a pair of goals within the first 20 minutes of either half. Coach Purcell's club went down swinging against the Runnin' Bulldogs amidst the shaky weather conditions on Wednesday, going blow-for-blow against a team who sits one win away from landing the top spot in the league standings.
True freshman
Lindsey Malyszek offered up her first career goal with less than a minute until the first half horn, receiving an assist from fellow rookie
Abby Ferris that tied up the contest in the waning moments of the opening stanza.
The series history hasn't necessarily been too kind to the Blue Hose over their meetings with the Eagles, beating Winthrop in the delayed 2020 campaign by a 3-1 margin before dropping a 2-1 outing last fall on an 89
th minute equalizer that prevented overtime in Rock Hill.
SENIOR DAY:
Dachs and Wilson have served as near-permanent fixtures in the Blue Hose back line since their respective freshmen seasons, making a combined 75 starts since the fall of 2019. Dachs, a Johns Creek, Ga. native and 2020 all-league Honorable Mention member, has been on the field for over 2,500 minutes since signing with Presbyterian, scoring a pair of goals each throughout her first two seasons while also landing two assists, the second coming earlier this year against Davidson. A product of Frederick, Md., Wilson has logged over 3,600 minutes as a defender in four years, starting a double-digit number of contests in nearly every season donning the blue and white.
Unfortunately forced to sit due to injury over the past two years, Ospina has nonetheless been a stellar offensive player for the 1,600 minutes that she has spent roaming the field. Scoring twice on eight shot attempts as a true freshman – one of them serving as the game-winner in the 95
th minute of overtime against Charleston Southern – the Norcross, Ga. native has landed seven shots on goal in 25 career starts.
One of the most electrifying offensive weapons in Presbyterian's Division I history, Lawrence features prominently throughout the school record books, ranking among PC's very best in nearly every offensive category. Ranking 2
nd in shots (114), 3
rd in points (34, one away from tying for 2
nd), and placing 4
th in total goals (13, one off a 3
rd-place tie), the Benson, N.C. product has indubitably left her mark on the program since her first season five years back. Lawrence was a member of the Big South's All-Freshman lineup in 2018, a conference All-Tournament team member in 2019, and an All-Big South second team recipient in the shortened spring '21 trip.
