CLINTON, S.C. – With only two Big South matchups remaining on the 2022 docket, the Presbyterian College women's soccer team will participate in their final road contest of the fall this weekend in North Carolina, visiting High Point in the season's second-to-last match. First touch at Vert Stadium is slated for 7:00 p.m. this Saturday evening.
Picking an opportune time to start playing their best of the season with three of their five wins in the past two and a half weeks, the Panthers find themselves on the cusp of making the four-team Big South Conference Tournament after consecutive W's by a combined 7-0 margin. Stirring the ingredients for an intriguing late-season duel in a hostile environment, the Blue Hose will hope to finish '22 on a high note and stop HPU's momentum in its tracks.
WHEN: Saturday, October 22
WHERE: Vert Stadium (High Point, N.C.)
TIME: 7:00 p.m.
RECORDS: Presbyterian (0-12-3, 0-6-1 Big South) – High Point (5-8-3, 4-2-1 Big South)
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT:
Completely turning their season around in a positive direction after a record of only 1-6-2 entering conference territory, High Point has suddenly become a prominent figure near the top of the league standings with only two dates remaining until the postseason, hoping to hold on to a top-four spot thanks to four wins inside of Big South play.
Since taking a 4-0 loss against Campbell (a result that also felled PC when competing against the Fighting Camels), HPU has entered an offensive resurgence that includes a 5-0 shellacking over UNC Asheville, a 4-0 beatdown over Gardner-Webb, and most recently a 3-0 shutout against Winthrop in Rock Hill. Altogether, the Panthers have outscored the other side 15-6 over their last six appearances, positioning themselves in a three-way tie with GWU and Radford for the #3 spot in the conference standings, yet to play the Highlanders but holding the tiebreaker over the Runnin' Bulldogs thanks to the aforementioned four-goal blowout.
Garnering significant consideration for Big South Coach of the Year honors by virtue of the midseason 180-turn in his first season as the program's leader, Aaron McGuiness' club is firing on all cylinders as of late, not taking a single loss in the month of October with four wins at home this fall.
Scoring the second-highest number of goals in the league since the schedule turned to conference-only matchups (15), High Point has combined their sizzling offensive numbers with a defense that has been equally impressive, shutting out four Big South teams en route to their midseason rejuvenation.
LAST TIME OUT:
On a night where Presbyterian celebrated the extraordinary careers of seniors
Sydni Dachs,
Kori Lawrence,
Carolay Ospina, and
Megan Wilson, the Blue Hose were unable to come through with a victory against Winthrop at Martin Stadium last weekend in a 1-0 decision for the Eagles. The match's lone goal occurred at the 29:51 stamp of the opening half, allowing the visitors to leave Clinton with the tight victory.
Although the team stayed the aggressor when swinging the ball around the offensive side of the field – which translated to an 18-8 difference in shots toward their favor – PC never could find the tying boot in the match's remaining 60 minutes, gaining 10 looks at the net over the final period to no avail.
Searching for a momentum-shattering road win this Saturday, the Blue Hose will look to put an end to a lengthy HPU winning streak in the two programs' D-I history, with the Panthers taking each of the last 10 decisions dating back to 2012.
