Women's Tennis Set for Busy Weekend

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's tennis team closes out its busy week with a pair of home matches beginning on Saturday at 10 a.m. against Longwood before hosting Chattanooga on Sunday at 10.

MATCHDAY CENTRAL
MATCHUP:  Longwood (7-8, 2-4 Big South) vs. Presbyterian (5-11, 3-2 Big South)
TIME: Saturday April 2, 10 a.m.
LOCATION: Templeton Tennis Courts (Clinton, S.C.)
 
MATCHUP:  Chattanooga (10-6, 2-1 SoCon) vs. Presbyterian
TIME: Sunday April 3, 10 a.m.
LOCATION: Templeton Tennis Courts (Clinton, S.C.)

COACH ROBERTS ON LONGWOOD & CHATTANOOGA MATCHES
"We are looking forward to a big weekend at home. We have two quality opponents and I know the team will be ready to go."

SCHEDULE CHANGES
- The Blue Hose match for slated for Thursday against Gardner-Webb was postponed due to rain in the Clinton area. The two teams will look to reschedule prior to the conclusion of the regular season
- PC's road match with UNC Asheville has been bumped back to Thursday April 7 at 2 p.m. from Asheville.

SCOUTING LONGWOOD
- Longwood begins the weekend with a 7-8 record after a 7-0 victory over Southern Virginia on Tuesday.
- The Lancers have tallied wins in league play against Hampton and N.C. A&T.
- Maria Saez is 7-1 playing at No.3 singles as Emma Nurgazieva is 5-7 playing at the top spot primarily for the Lancers.
- Nurgazieva and Karina Rizvanova at 7-3 at the top doubles spot for Longwood so far in the 2022 season.
- The Blue Hose have a 6-3 edge in the all-time series with Longwood including wins in each of the last four meetings. PC won last spring 7-0 in Farmville.
 
SCOUTING CHATTANOOGA
- Chattanooga enters the weekend with a 10-6 record as the Mocs face Furman on Saturday before traveling to Clinton on Sunday morning.
- Emma Van Hee leads the way with 11 singles wins this spring followed just behind by Caroline Gibbens and Coco Bosman each with 10 wins.
- Bosman and Van Hee are the Mocs top doubles duo with an 8-3 record playing all 11 matches at No. 2 doubles.
- The Mocs have won the two prior meetings with the Blue Hose by a 6-1 margin in each matchup. The most recent matchup occurred last February.

JAMAL EARNS BIG SOUTH HONORS
- Presbyterian College senior Zeba Jamal was named the Big South Women's Tennis Co-Player of the Week, for the week of March 14-20, the league announced on Wednesday.
- It's the first Player of the Week honor for Jamal in her Blue Hose career and the fourth award that PC has earned in the 2022 season. Senior Jessica Leeman earned a Player of Week earlier this season and freshman Claudia Sanchez netted two Freshman of the Week honors.
- The Bradenton, Fla. native paired with senior Beth Lacey earned a dominating 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles that propelled the Blue Hose to a 1-0 lead on Saturday against Radford. Jamal and Lacey improved to 3-0 in doubles action in conference play for the Blue Hose.
- Playing from the No. 1 singles position, Jamal battled back from a first set defeat to win in three sets with an 11-9 super tiebreak in the third set to defeat the reigning Big South Player and Freshman of the Year.

RECORD WATCH
- Senior Jessica Leeman has tallied 12 conference wins in her career at Presbyterian and needs just three more to set the program record held by Tracy Johnson and Katie Thompson with 14 apiece.
- Freshman Claudia Sanchez needs just three more wins at the No. 3 singles position to set the DI single-season record for wins at that spot with eight.

PRESEASON POLL
- The Presbyterian College women's tennis team was selected fourth by the league's coaches in the Big South Preseason Poll, as was announced earlier this week.
- The fourth-place selection marks the highest ever preseason ranking the Blue Hose have earned in their time in the Big South surpassing the fifth-place selection during the 2019 preseason.
- Charleston Southern received eight first-place votes and 80 total points as the Buccaneers were tabbed to win the league. Radford earned a first-place vote and earned 62 points. Campbell totaled 57 points and finished in third place with PC earning 56 points and finishing in fourth in the preseason poll. UNC Asheville was selected fifth with 49 points, while Gardner-Webb slid in sixth place with 47 points. Longwood was chosen seventh in the preseason poll with 27 points, with N.C. A&T (15 points) in eighth and Hampton rounded out the field with 12 points in ninth place.
