CLINTON, S.C. – On the heels of a 1-1 tie with the Longwood Lancers 48 hours ago to inaugurate the 2022 Big South conference journey, the Presbyterian College women's soccer team will flip from the visiting side back to the friendly confines of Martin Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Head coach
Brian Purcell and the Blue Hose venture back to Clinton on Sept. 24 to face off with the Radford Highlanders at 4:00 p.m.
Aiming for a result akin to that of a 1-0 victory at home two seasons ago in contrast to a 3-0 shutout for Radford in the Commonwealth State last fall, Presbyterian hopes to dispel their recent misfortunes against their league foe from the north, coming up shy of the W in five of the last six meetings across the series.
WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 24
WHERE: Edens Field at Martin Stadium (Clinton, S.C.)
TIME: 4:00 p.m.
RECORDS: Presbyterian (0-6-3), Radford (4-1-4)
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT:
Much like PC through the first month of the season, the Highlanders have been no stranger to draws. Four of Radford's results on the year have ended in a stalemate, including their last two at Appalachian State and versus Campbell in Wednesday's Big South starter. Only one opponent can claim an outright win over head coach Ben Sohrabi during his 27
th campaign as the ring leader, occurring 36 days ago in the very first match of the year against Concord.
Since that point, the Highlanders have claimed wins over Hampton, Wofford, Marshall, and Western Carolina by a combined score of 12-2. Following a 1-1 deadlock with Campbell – one of three ties in the conference on Wednesday including PC's draw at Longwood – Radford places first in the Big South in corner kick opportunities (70), ranking second in total shots (152) and third in goals (18).
This weekend's bout will mark only the third time that the Highlanders have traveled away from the state of Virginia, boasting an undefeated record outside their home venue. Campbell nearly gave Radford their first loss of the entire month of September on a 54
th-minute strike, although Alexeis Kirnos posted her third goal of the season with just under 10 minutes to go to manage the tie, keeping the Highlanders without a true L in their last eight appearances.
LAST TIME OUT:
The Blue Hose coincidentally landed on a similar path as Radford on Wednesday in Farmville, conceding the game's first goal late in the first half before fighting back to secure the tying strike 30 minutes later. In her return bout from a five-match injury absence, graduate forward
Kori Lawrence found her second goal of the year off the PC bench, receiving an assist from
Reyna Coston to even things up at one where it would stay for the rest of the night.
Coming out of a 10-day break in competition to finish their third tie of 2022, coach Purcell's unit garnered seven corner kicks and 12 shots overall against the Lancers. Two of PC's three victories over the Highlanders since joining D-I have taken place at Martin Stadium, including their first matchup in 2007 by a 2-0 clip.
