PC Downs Asheville in Midweek Conference Battle

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's basketball team got back in the win column on Wednesday night with a 67-53 victory over UNC Asheville inside the Templeton Center. The Blue Hose were led offensively by Mara Neira with 17 points, as Núria Cunill led PC on the boards with 13 rebounds in the win over the Bulldogs.

Scoring the Game
- Bryanna Brady got the opening layup of the contest tonight before a 6-2 burst gave the Bulldogs an early 6-4 advantage with 6:18 to play in the quarter. PC answered with a 6-4 run over the next three minutes to tie it a 10 with 3:56 to play in the quarter. Asheville had a 6-0 burst before eight straight from the Blue Hose, giving them an 18-16 lead after one. 
- PC began the second with an 8-4 run, extending it to 26-20 with 7:13 to play in the first half. After a pair of Bulldogs free throws, PC answered in a big way with a 9-0 run to extend it to a 13-point edge, 35-22, with 4:36 to play in the half. UNC Asheville cut a small amount into the lead with six of the final 10 points in the half to make it a 39-28 lead after 20 minutes. 
- The hosts opened the third quarter with a quick 5-2 burst to push the advantage to 14, 44-30 just a minute and a half into the second half. Following a quick three from Asheville, PC used a 7-1 run to push the lead out to 51-34 with 4:21 to play in the quarter. The Bulldogs responded with a pair of threes that whittled the lead down to 11, 51-40, with 2:36 to play. The run was thwarted by a couple of Brady layups that allowed the advantage to swell to 15, and we went to the fourth with a 55-42 lead. 
- The guests carried the momentum of the late third quarter with the quarter's first four points that cut the Blue Hose lead to nine, 55-46, with 8:00 to play, which forced PC to call a timeout. The Bulldogs cut the deficit to seven, 55-48, before PC used a 10-2 run over the next four minutes to push to a 65-50 lead. UNC Asheville cut it to 13, but a pair of late free throws from Aubrie Kierscht helped secure the 67-53 victory over the Bulldogs

Players of the Game
- Neira led the Blue Hose on Wednesday with 17 points as she connected on 8-of-17 field goals and pulled down eight defensive rebounds. Laila Grant added 11 points and three assists in the victory, while Tilda Sjökvist finished with 10 points on 4-of-6 from the floor. Cunill led the Blue Hose on the glass on Wednesday with 13 rebounds, including six on the offensive end. Grant, Sjökvist, and Neira each finished with three assists. McKinley Brooks-Sumpter led the Bulldogs with 17 points, and Dakota McCaughan added 14 points as she connected on four threes in the contest. Abigail Wilson led the Bulldogs on the glass with six rebounds. Jamaya Blanks led Asheville with a pair of helpers. 

Stats of the Game
- PC shot 47.3% (26-of-55) as the Bulldogs were held to 27.3% (15-of-55) from the field on Wednesday. Asheville converted on six threes as the Blue Hose only made three triples. The guests went 17-of-23 from the foul line, while the Blue Hose were 12-of-17 at the charity stripe. Presbyterian doubled up the Bulldogs on the glass with a 50-25 advantage, which included 36-18 on the defensive and 14-7 on the offensive boards. PC controlled the points in the paint with a 44-14 edge. UNC Asheville outscored the Blue Hose on bench points by scoring 21 compared to 19 from PC. 

Notables
- Neira led the Blue Hose in the victory with 17 points, marking her fifth time leading the team in scoring this season. 
- The Blue Hose sophomore made eight field goals and also pulled down a season-high eight rebounds. 
- Cunill tallied her third double-figure rebounding output of the season with a season-best 13 rebounds, which included six offensive and seven defensive boards to pace the 50-25 edge on the boards for PC on Wednesday. Cunill's 13 rebounds are the second most in a game by a Blue Hose player, as Brady tallied 14 in the season-opener over Carolina University. 
- Grant added her third double-figure scoring performance over her last four with 11 points on a perfect 3-of-3 field goals and also added five points at the charity stripe. 
- Sjökvist finished with 10 points, as she's tallied 10+ points in three of her last four games.
- Kierscht did it on the glass for PC on Wednesday with a career-high seven rebounds and adding five points on the offensive end. 
- Brady appeared in her 100th career college game on Wednesday for the Blue Hose, which also served as her 50th game for Presbyterian. The fifth-year senior also appeared in 50 games with UC-Riverside before joining PC before the 2021-22 season. 
- The Blue Hose 50 rebounds on Wednesday are tied for the second highest in a single game this season as PC matched its rebounding output from its overtime win over UNCG earlier this season.
