PC Rolls into Rock Hill for Wednesday Duel at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Getting a few extra days to prepare for their fourth encounter of the 2023 campaign against an in-state opponent that will also be their fourth meeting inside Big South Conference territory, the Presbyterian College lacrosse team makes the 60-minute drive to Winthrop tomorrow evening in pursuit of a 3-1 league record. Opening draw versus the Eagles is mounted for 6:00 p.m.

Last weekend's planned matchup with Gardner-Webb was effectively postponed due to lengthy periods of rain on gameday and in the 24 hours leading up to it, pushing back the Bailey Memorial contest to eight days from now instead. By virtue of the G-W delay, the Blue Hose and fourth-year head coach Eric Clakeley will end their week-long respite on Wednesday against a school they have yet to topple in their affiliation with the Big South.

WHO: Presbyterian (5-6, 2-1) at Winthrop (3-8, 0-4)

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
- Tomorrow's midweek tussle, streamed live on ESPN+, will entail two schools who've seen vastly different conference paths to this point. While Presbyterian enjoyed its first 2-0 Big South start in school history and best record through 10 games ever, the Eagles have swayed in the opposite direction at 3-8 overall next to a winless state in league meetings (0-4).

- Kara Concheck took over the head coaching responsibilities for Winthrop in the offseason, controlling a '23 roster that has gathered 98 goals in 11 appearances for an average of nearly nine scores per contest. However, the Eagles' Achilles Heel has been on the other end of the field, surrendering at least 11 goals in each bout but one for an average of 16 scores by the opposition.

- Each of Winthrop's victories have necessitated a high-scoring pace (16-13 over Kennesaw State, 16-11 against Eastern Michigan, and a 10-9 triple overtime thriller versus Butler on a neutral field in Tennessee), although their last two visits in Big South action have been largely one-sided. Mercer and Furman downed the Eagles by a combined margin of 30 after dropping their first two conference contests by a total of just three goals to High Point and Wofford.

LAST TIME OUT
- PC amassed 26 combined goals in victorious performances over the Terriers and Radford to kick off their league slate with high hopes for the four-team postseason one month from now, although were met with a 16-4 defeat at the hands of Campbell in their last showing on April 5. The Fighting Camels totaled a 7-0 difference on the board after 15 minutes, giving the Blue Hose their first setback in 11 days.

- Coach Clakeley's unit hopes to return to their high-powered ways against a vulnerable Winthrop foe, reaching all but one of their W's this year when playing the visitors' role. Speaking of road games, the last time that the Blue Hose competed outside Clinton was arguably their most complete effort of 2023 in a 14-5 blowout over the Highlanders, the program's largest margin of victory in a Big South outing over the past six years.

- As things stand, PC maintains the #4 spot in the latest league standings with six bouts still in front of them, aiming to stay within the conference's top half by the time that the season's finale on the 29th hits. Admission into the conference tourney would be another first-time mark for a team that's no stranger to making history, hoping to accomplish an additional new feat by besting a Winthrop program that is currently 12-0 against them all-time.

- Last season's 9-7 loss in Clinton stood as the closest miss that Presbyterian has endured in their history with the Eagles that dates back to 2013, unable to overcome a 5-2 discrepancy in the game's final period.
