WSOC Starts Two-Game Road Week at High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Presbyterian College women's soccer program will play its final two road matches of the 2024 regular season this week, competing in two different states over the next four days. Next up for the Blue Hose: a trip to High Point tomorrow night at 7:00.

Bringing their conference-best defense into a venue where it was victorious two years ago, PC hopes to atone for a tie last Friday against Winthrop where a two-score lead was whisked away in a 15-minute span.

Aspiring for a top-two seed in the Big South Tournament next month, head coach Matt Smith's group will aim for a resume-builder against an opponent who has begun to play more consistently compared to the early stages of the fall.

Four of Presby's six wins in '24 have come as the visiting party, searching for their first road W over a league adversary on Wednesday. ESPN+ will be broadcasting the event, as Presbyterian plays in the state of North Carolina for the third time this semester.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT

- A bit of an up-and-down year has surrounded HPU under head coach Aaron McGuiness' watch, battling stiff non-conference competition such as Clemson and Virginia Tech and earning four of their five wins on their home base.

- Each time that High Point has picked up a victory, they've done so while holding the other side to zero on the scoreboard. They shut out Winthrop back on October 8 for their second Big South W, but saw that momentum slide away on Saturday in a 3-1 defeat to USC Upstate.

- Although the Panthers were able to scratch with 17 seconds left until intermission, they'd give up a couple of second-half scores which resulted in their first conference loss of the season.

- HPU averages just one goal allowed per match, however the total tally since August reads 16-15 in favor of High Point's opponents. They've played 10 matches that didn't end in a tie, with eight of those decided by more than one goal.

LAST TIME OUT

- Presbyterian was smooth sailing against Winthrop on Friday, leading by a deuce through the first 75 minutes. The mood dipped in the game's final act, however, which enabled the Eagles to pull out a surprise and tie the match with 60 seconds to go.

- Two/thirds of PC's Big South meetings have ended with a draw, factoring in an earlier tie with USC Upstate in the last duel of September. On the season, the Blue Hose have recorded three ties, all by the same score of 2-2.

- Sloan Spees and Gwen Keiser were the culprits to Presby's 2-0 edge, emphasizing coach Smith's offensive depth with 10 different goal-scorers on the year.

- Since taking consecutive 1-0 losses to talented SoCon foes Western Carolina and Mercer, PC has gathered seven goals in their last three affairs, four of which came in the opening half.

IMPOSING D

- The Blue Hose have assembled the best back line in the Big South when strictly looking at the numbers, allowing only 14 goals in 12 games (the lowest number in the division).

- Senior goalkeeper Kelly Hall is at the nucleus of Presbyterian's defense, never leaving the field at any point on the season and conceding just one goal per match on average.

- Against Winthrop, PC held the other side scoreless in the first half for the sixth time in 2024. The Scotsmen have given up just four goals within the final 30 minutes of a match, going on an eight-game streak earlier this year without any scores allowed after the 60-minute mark.
