Blue Hose Travel to The Citadel, then Host Georgia State

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Reaching the end of a six-match streak all against schools from the state of South Carolina, the Presbyterian College women's soccer program will hit the road for the first time in two weeks on Thursday afternoon for an intriguing matchup against The Citadel.

Held between two clubs who each already display four wins, PC will get things started with the Bulldogs at 4:00 PM tomorrow. Following that Charleston trip, head coach Matt Smith's unit will return home for a Sunday duel with Georgia State.

It's been six years since Presbyterian picked up the W in four of their first five matches, a feat that Smith has achieved in his debut season with the Scotsmen thanks to a current three-game winning streak.

During that span, the Blue Hose have knocked off Furman, Southern Wesleyan, and South Carolina State by a combined clip of 8-2. They're now two wins away from equaling the school's Division I record for most W's in a row.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT – CITADEL

- The only school in the 10-team Southern Conference without a true loss in the first three weeks of the season, The Citadel is coming off a vicious 9-0 result over Toccoa Falls on the final day of August.

- Each of the Bulldogs' last three wins have entailed a shutout, also blanking Winthrop and S.C. State. In fact, The Citadel has conceded just two goals in 450 minutes of action.

- Under the direction of nine-year head coach Ciaran Traquair, The Citadel has been just as formidable on the offensive end by totaling 18 goals and 14 assists (both ranking second in the SoCon).

- The Bulldogs have already surpassed their win count from all of 2023 when they accomplished just three victories, unbeaten at home with their only non-win result occurring at Gardner-Webb in a 1-1 draw.

- The all-time series between PC and The Citadel reads 5-4 in favor of Presby, although the last meeting (2022) swayed to the other side in a busy 4-2 bout from Clinton.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT – GEORGIA STATE

- An 0-3-1 record beside Georgia State's name is deceptive to say the least, plagued with a very difficult schedule right out of the gates that has included Ole Miss, Florida, and last season's SoCon Tournament champions Western Carolina.

- Beginning the '24 slate with a 2-2 tie versus Chattanooga, the Panthers haven't been able to find a win yet against three straight foes who have added up for seven wins.

- GSU will look to steer the ship in the right direction on Thursday by battling Kennesaw State in Atlanta, finishing a three-match home stand before taking to the road to visit Presbyterian.

- In a loaded Sun Belt Conference that features 14 teams, Georgia State was predicted in a tie for 4th on the preseason coaches' poll, heralding a nine-win trek last fall that included an impressive 11 shutouts.

- One of those shutouts was a 1-0 tally against the Blue Hose in the Peach State, a contest where the long goal was submitted at the 37:18 stamp.

- Head coach Ed Joyce is in the midst of his ninth season with GSU, having defeated PC in all four of his attempts thus far. 2022's clash was also decided by a 1-0 margin.

BLUE HOSE RESURGENCE

- It's taken Smith no time at all to bring the Blue Hose near the top of the Big South standings in his first task, collecting 11 goals altogether which ranks second in the league.

- Presbyterian secured four goals in a single match for the first time since 2018 on Sunday in the aforementioned blowout against S.C. State, braving inclement weather to punch in three second-half strikes on a night where they scattered 28 shots.

- Redshirt-sophomore Lina-Marie Müller drilled the back of the net in less than three minutes and later scooped her second goal of the evening in the second period, named the Adidas / Game One PC Student-Athlete of the Week for her high-octane performance.

- Junior Sloan Spees was also effective in the PC attack, creating a 49th-minute tiebreaking score and then delivering an assist to Müller's second hit only 23 seconds later.

- Prior to the 4-1 W over S.C. State, the Blue Hose celebrated Senior Night on August 29 with a 2-0 triumph against Southern Wesleyan. The first of those goals appropriately came from one of the team's five seniors, Sarah Dieffenderfer, in the 56th minute.

- With three weeks left until Big South play begins, Presbyterian is poised to drastically overachieve when taking into account their 7th-place preseason projection. They are currently tied with last season's conference tournament champs, Radford, for the best record in the division.
