MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Less than 24 hours before entering their name to the Red Lady Open hosted by Huntingdon, the seventh-ranked Presbyterian College women's wrestling team became the only school of the six on hand to go 3-0 in a set of round robin duals on Friday afternoon.
The Blue Hose took down the hosting Hawks (36-10) and Texas Woman's University (28-17) to advance to the first-place matchup, emerging on the winning side of a 23-21 result opposite Lindsey Wilson at a neutral site.
For the second time this season, a dual that was hanging in the balance was saved by PC's 207-lb. competitor, echoing the Campbellsville victory on a Charleston Battleship last November. Freshman
Maria Aiono turned a three-point team deficit into a clutch two-point W with a 1:40 pin that toppled the Blue Raiders.
Now with five dual wins to their name with the campaign edging past the two-month mark, Presby returns to the brackets on Saturday for the Huntingdon tournament that begins at 10:00 AM eastern time.
They've already accomplished 17 individual titles in only four prior tournament appearances this year, continuing their push to a national championship in March.
NOTABLES
- Whereas regular 207-lb. starter
Ella Beam was the hero when the Scotsmen outlasted Campbellsville in their first dual of the season, it was Aiono's turn to throw out the life jacket as she downed Alyssa Pinkston in short order.
- A standard decision would not have been enough for PC to gain the win, as Aiono needed either a pin or a tech to secure the game-winner. She delivered just what the doctor ordered, presenting her squad with a 5-1 dual record and their 13
th dual win over the past two seasons.
- Aiono's rookie classmate
Chloe Dearwester continued her flawless debut year in a Blue Hose singlet, defeating all three of her adversaries which improves her personal mark to 12-0.
- Head coach
Brian Vutianitis' crew finished the Huntingdon dual on an eight-match winning streak, deleting an early hole to win by 26 points. They followed that up with a fast start versus Texas Woman's, staving off a late rally from the Pioneer to win by 11.
- TWU ended up with five straight wins in the second dual of the day after Presby assumed a 19-0 lead, although four of those results were standard decisions, meaning the gap stayed relatively large.
- Aiono boosted the final margin to 11 with an 81-second fall, a bit of foreshadowing to her Lindsey Wilson heroics about an hour later.
- The entire match was played within a five-point window against a feisty Lindsey Wilson foe, a clash that featured six lead changes and two ties. A 12-2 technical from LW was enough to put the pressure on PC, but Aiono handled the moment in less than one period to tug the win right from under the Blue Raiders' nose.
