Softball Welcomes Black Bears & Buccaneers

CLINTON, S.C. – The home-heavy February slate rolls on for the Presbyterian College softball team this weekend, hosting the Pinnacle PC Invitational on Friday and Saturday with a potential third day of action on Sunday.

Expected rain has caused the tournament schedule to be reworked a bit, with the Blue Hose competing twice tomorrow and twice more the next day. Presby will face two schools that are located nearly 17 hours apart, meeting ETSU and Maine.

It was a mixed bag for the Scotsmen last weekend in a five-game slate with three visitors, sweeping Morehead State (6-4 and 9-6) but unable to come away with the win against either Northern Kentucky or George Washington.

PC closed that tourney on a high note by beating MSU for the third straight time dating back to last spring, accomplishing 12 hits and ending the contest on a 9-3 run.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT – ETSU

- A member of the SoCon, East Tennessee State endured a spotty performance in the first weekend of the season during an invite to Campbell. In Buies Creek, the Bucs mustered a sole win over Kent State (5-3), while dropping their other four encounters.

- They were beaten in the first try against the Golden Flashes, also on the wrong end of a sweep at the hands of the UMass Minutemen. ETSU finished the round robin event with a 12-4 loss to the hosting party, surrendering at least one run in five straight innings against Campbell.

- It was a mostly forgettable campaign for the Buccaneers and head coach Cheryl Milligan last spring, going 11-39 and dropping their last six affairs. Their season was ended prematurely in a single-elimination game at the league tourney, falling to Wofford on a 10th-inning walk-off.

- Presbyterian got the better of the Bucs when they last played a doubleheader in March 2022, emerging with 5-0 and 4-3 victories. Then-freshman Kelby Goodrum was the lone member of that PC team who still resides on the roster.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT – MAINE

- Friday will be the beginning of a new era for Black Bear softball, as Kimberly Stiles accepted a vacant head coaching position at Maine over the summer. She takes over a program that was firmly in the doldrums last season, finishing with only five wins and 41 losses.

- Stiles steps into the role at Maine after spending the previous three seasons at Holy Cross in Massachusetts, guiding the Crusaders to 50 wins over that stretch. Prior to that, she served at Division II institution Charleston for five years, surpassing 130 victories.

- The Black Bears will try to rebuild from a season where they achieved only one win in America East games, with a particular lowlight in the form of a 16-game losing streak that spanned the entire month of March.

- Similar to PC's lone game versus George Washington last weekend, Friday's duel will be the first-ever matchup between the Blue Hose and their northeast visitors.

LAST TIME OUT

- Presbyterian dished out a nice rebound four days ago in the aforementioned sprint with Morehead, outgunning the Eagles by three in a game where 15 total runs were scored in the first three innings.

- Trailing by a pair at the game's halfway point, the Blue Hose erupted for a five-spot in the bottom of the 3rd, highlighted by junior Morgan Farthing's bases-clearing double to give her team the advantage for the rest of the day.

- Goodrum and Baxleigh Arnette – PC's first two batters in the order – combined for four hits, four RBI, and two runs as the blue and garnet outlasted MSU, while true freshman pitcher Grace Kelley published her first career win.

- On the offensive end, Presby's most consistent hitter through five games has been senior outfielder Mallory Fletcher (.462 average). She's cracked two doubles and a homer already, leading the roster thus far with 11 total bases.
