CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The youngest regular starter on the Presbyterian College women's soccer team and an individual that has stepped into the goalkeeper spot with flying colors thus far, rookie
Febe Dombrecht was chosen as the Big South Freshman of the Week on Monday afternoon.
In the early stages of the 2025 campaign, Dombrecht has been a major bright spot for a PC group that endured a nil-nil draw with The Citadel and acquired their first win of the season over South Carolina State last night.
A native of Belgium, she has saved 92 percent of the 20 shots that have come in her direction. Dombrecht has played all 180 minutes to this point, surrendering only one goal and already sealing one shutout.
BELGIAN BRUTE
- Febe's Presbyterian debut against The Citadel saw her snag 10 saves, the second-most of any Blue Hose freshman in the school's 18-year Division I history.
- She never let the Bulldogs score a single goal despite 17 shots that entered her territory, gaining a clean sheet in her very first NCAA match and her first game in the United States.
- After an early slip-up at S.C. State on Sunday, Dombrecht did not let the opponent reach a second goal for the last 86 minutes of action. She finishes her first week of competition with 11 saves and just one score given up.
- It has been nine years since a freshman stopper had at least 10 saves in a single match for the Blue Hose, as Dombrecht established a new school record for most saves in a player's first-ever appearance during The Citadel tie.
IN THE WIN COLUMN
- While PC's offense couldn't match Dombrecht's defiance in the season-opener (settling for a 0-0 result), the opposite outcome was reached in defeating South Carolina State.
-
Harlan Lyons and
Emma Brown tag-teamed two goals that were over an hour apart, both scoring their first goals at the college level to erase the early 1-0 deficit.
- S.C. State could only muster two more shots for the rest of the contest after sneaking one in at the 4:29 stamp. Presbyterian is one of three Big South schools to give up only one goal at this stage of the season, along with UNC Asheville and Longwood.
FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK HISTORY
- Dombrecht becomes the third PC player in the D-I era to be named Big South Freshman of the Week, joining fellow keeper Megan Serrano (2018) and now-senior
Sloan Spees who won the award three years ago.
- The European is the fourth player in the
Matt Smith administration to win a weekly award from the Big South, as the trio of Lina Müller,
Isabel Lasota, and
Kelly Hall all received that distinction last fall.
LOOKING AHEAD
- Following the S.C. State win (Smith's 35
th all-time victory over a South Carolina opponent), the Blue Hose will stay at home for their next five matches. Mercer begins that streak this Thursday, beginning at 7:00 PM.
- Presby hopes for a dose of revenge on the Bears, who churned out a 1-0 decision in Macon last September en route to an 11-win season.
- PC and Mercer combined for 18 wins in 2024, setting the scene for an intriguing non-conference affair at Martin Stadium in three days.
