Presbyterians Administer Conclusive Defeat to Old Gold and Black with Wofford
Trailing Throughout - Game is Carried to Methodist From Start
Wofford Terriers lost their clash against the P.C. Blue Stockings last night failing to get through the Presbyterian defense with any regularity and therefore failing to win. Walter Johnson's quint going home after the game well pleased and satisfied with a 45 to 27 contest. The Blue Stockings carried the game to the Terriers with the first whistle and never relented their fast and furious floor game which bottled up Wofford's best laid plans caused wild and ineffective shooting and resulted in a thorough trouncing for the Old Gold and Black.
Wofford did not get under way with the game and had not found the basket up to the time P.C.'s score had advanced to seven points. Though never even close to knotting the score, the Terriers continued the fight in losing fashion until the last. The final phase of the game developed a walk away for the visitors with Stamps and Dunlap scoring most of the 13 P.C. points counted in the closing minutes of the game.
The Blue Stockings disported a well knit and although effective defense, hard plugging by Adair and Witherspoon, P.C. guards standing out throughout the game as they crushed one Wofford effort after another at advancing the ball under the goal. The Terriers were practically deprived of any snowbird shots and their long tries missed the hoop time after time. Members of the Old Gold and Black squad worked faithfully to get the ball in shooting position but invariably the Presbyterian defense closed in to take the ball away or stop the action toward the basket.
Distance shooting came in well for the Blue Hose for they were also forced to try from out in the court by the hard work of Kennedy and Lockman, Terrier goal defenders. However, Dunlap and Stamps had a good night on their side and straight forward sinks and between the pair, 14 field goals were registered, while Robinson with three and Charley Wilson with two added edge to P.C.'s advantage that made it insurmountable as far as the Terriers were concerned.
Jimmie Stamps gave a clean and cool exhibition of carefully and skillfully handled shots several of his baskets being put in from out in the court. He played a dandy floor game besides and seemed to have the knack of avoiding guards long enough to get set for a shot. Dunlap, scoring horse for the Blue Sox all season, was also dangerous but was forced to relinquish the high point place to Stamps last night.
The entire Terrier crew played courageously and with all their might but for some reason simply was not set for their rivals. Just what was wrong was hard to diagnose fairly but they were not themselves. Now and then there was a flicker of the top form they have exhibited heretofore, which had it been sustained would have altered the scoring stand quickly, but the Old Gold and Black could not hold themselves to the point and the moment they lapsed the Blue Hose were on the attack again.
Fred Shuler, with a pair of difficult shots made in close quarters and Red Habel with another of the same variety gave Wofford supporters something to enthuse over while the strenuous work of both Kennedy and Lockman at guard was commendable.
