RICHMOND, Va. - Georgia College & State University placed four players in double figures led by senior Andre Smith's 22 points as the No. 6 seed Bobcats defeated No. 7 Presbyterian College 77-58 in semifinals of the 2006 NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional Tournament held at the Arthur Ashe Center.
The victory puts the Bobcats (22-8) in the region championship game versus the winner of top seed Virginia Union University/No. 4 seed Columbus State University on Tuesday, March 14 at 7:00 pm. Presbyterian ends their season at 25-10.
GCSU led by as many as nine points (17-8) 12:39 mark on a free throw by sophomore Aaron Clark (Swanee, Ga.) before the Blue Hose put together an 11-5 run over the next six minutes to trim the lead to 22-19 on a three-pointer by freshman Bryan Bostic (Norcross, Ga.) with 6:41 remaining in the half.
The Bobcats pushed the lead to 31-23 with 1:25 remaining on a jumper by Smith, but PC's senior Johann Collins (Raleigh, N.C.) hit a pair of free throws with less than a minute left to cut the lead to 31-25 at the half. The Bobcats had four players notch six points apiece in the first half, while Collins led the Blue Hose with eight first half points.
The Bobcats opened the second half on a 13-7 run to increase their advantage to 44-32 at the 12:33 mark on a pair of free throws by senior Shejdie Childs (Philadelphia, Pa.). The Blue Hose would cut the lead to nine points (49-40) on a jumper by junior Sean Dixon (Marietta, Ga.) at the 8:44 mark, but that would be as close as PC would get the rest of the game. The Bobcats shot 62.0% from the floor in the second half and connected on 19-of-25 free throw attempts to seal the victory.
Joining Smith for Bobcat scoring honors was Clark who tallied a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Childs added 17 points. Senior Bryan Harrison (Tallahassee, Fla.) added 10 points and six boards for the Bobcats.
Presbyterian was led in scoring by Collins who tallied a team-best 20 points to go along with three boards in his final game in a Blue Hose uniform. Dixon chipped in 13 points, while fellow senior Tray Ballenger (Wellford, S.C.) added three points and six boards in his final game.
