LEXINGTON, Va. - Presbyterian fought back from a one-goal halftime deficit with three unanswered scores in the second half and the Blue Hose collected a 3-1 win over VMI in women's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Patchin Field.
With the victory, PC improves to 4-7-1 overall, while the Keydets fall to 4-10-2.
The win is the first of the year for the Blue Hose against Big South opposition as PC is now 1-3-1 against their future league foes in their first NCAA Division I season.
The Keydets jumped on top in the game's 22nd-minute with junior Megan Strand firing a shot from the top of the box that PC senior goalkeeper Erin Sinkuler was unable to corral. Strand's third goal of the season came as a result of a double assist with both sophomore Chrissy Beach and freshman A.J. Baker notching helpers.
The Blue Hose held a 6-4 advantage in shots in the first half, but were unable to find the back of the net until the game's 61st-minute when junior forward Ashley Cook (Charlotte, N.C.) connected with a header off of a corner kick by junior midfielder Christy Howard (Lilburn, Ga.) to knot the game at one.
PC then quickly seized the lead on a pass from the right flank off the foot of freshman Melanie Martin (Simpsonville, S.C.) to captain Millie Green (Columbia, S.C.) for a 2-1 advantage. The assist was the first of Martin's career.
The Blue Hose notched the game's final goal in the 81st-minute when Howard scored her third goal of the season on a wild scramble in front of the net, collecting the ball on the left side of the box and putting it into the empty goal.
Presbyterian held a 16-6 advantage in shots in the contest, while also collecting seven corner kicks to VMI's two. Sinkuler made four saves for PC to collect the win, while freshman Angela Redmond and sophomore Kathleen Underwood split time in goal for the Keydets.
The Blue Hose close out their 2007 season with two home games over the next two Sunday's. PC will next play High Point at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 28 before closing their 2007 campaign with a game against Radford at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 4.
