Tough Stretch Ends With Narrow Loss

ROCK HILL, S.C. ? Presbyterian College once again found itself within distance of picking up a win over a future Big South Conference opponent in a 55-48 loss to Winthrop on Wednesday evening at the Winthrop Coliseum.

The loss to Winthrop ended one of the hardest stretches in college basketball as the Blue Hose have now played four games in the last five days and six games in the last 11 days.

The six games included games against the SEC's Georgia, the ACC's Wake Forest, NC State and Georgia Tech, the Patriot League's Army and the Big South's Winthrop.

PC played ACC opponents NC State and Georgia Tech in back-to-back games last Saturday and Sunday and ended the four games in five days run with a win over Army on Tuesday and a loss to Winthrop on Wednesday. PC is the only school in the nation to have two back-to-back games in a single week.

PC (2-20) and Winthrop (9-6) went into the final minute of the game with Winthrop clinging to a 50-48 lead.

The Eagles were then able to pick up a steal and grab an easy basket to pull ahead by two possessions at 52-48.

Winthrop hit a free throw and then dunked the basketball with a few seconds left to walk away with the seven-point win.

PC was led in the loss by Al'Lonzo Coleman (Charlotte, N.C.), who finished his night with a game-high 17 points and six rebounds.

Coleman was 7-of-9 from the field in the contest. The freshman center was one of two Blue Hose to finish in double digits as Bryan Bostic (Norcross, Ga.) had 10 points for PC in the game.

Winthrop had two players finish in double figures in Chris Gaynor and Michael Jenkins, who both had 11 in the game.

Overall, PC shot 46.2 percent in the game (18-of-39), while Winthrop shot 56.4 percent (22-for-39).

Down by just four at halftime, PC allowed the Eagles to start the second half on an 11-6 run. The run gave the Eagles a 41-32 lead at the second media timeout of the second half.

Shortly thereafter the Blue Hose allowed Winthrop to grab its largest lead of the contest at 12 points at 44-32 with 10:31 left in the second half.

PC then proceeded to chop the lead in half by going on a 6-0 run to cut Winthrop's advantage to 44-38 with 7:51 left in the game.

The run would go to 8-0 to put PC behind by just four. Winthrop's Taj McCullough ended the PC run, scoring his first points on a jumper in the paint over Coleman.

PC would then go on another 6-0 run to push the overall run to 14-2 and tie the game at 46-46. Coleman did everything for PC in his efforts to square the game as he made a steal on the defensive end, dribbled the length of the court and then hit a jumper in the lane to put PC one behind at 46-45.

Coleman was fouled in the process of hitting the runner. He hit his free throw and the Blue Hose and Eagles were tied for the first time in the second half with just around five minutes left to go in the game.

PC opened the game down 7-2, but they obtained their first lead of the contest at 8-7 in the opening minutes of the game when Kiscaden knocked down a three-pointer from the left corner.

The two teams would stay tight over the next minutes with the Blue Hose taking the lead again on two separate occasions. Winthrop held a slim 19-16 advantage with 7:22 remaining in the first half.

PC would not take the lead again in the first half with Winthrop taking a four-point lead into halftime at 30-26.

Bostic and Coleman led PC in the first half, scoring six points each. Winthrop was led in the first half by Gaynor, who had eight points.

PC ended the half shooting 44.4 percent (8-for-18), while Winthrop ended the half shooting 56.5 percent (13-of-23).

Presbyterian now has eight days off before playing its third home game of the year against Montreat College at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 17.
