LYNCHBURG, Va. ? Presbyterian College women's soccer faced a constant barrage of shots by Liberty on Saturday evening as the team lost 5-1 at Liberty Soccer Field.
The trouble started early for the Blue Hose as the Flames' Maria Owen picked up a loose ball on the left wing and shot from 18 yards out to score the game's first goal less than two minutes into the first half. The midfielder added to PC's woes two minutes later by splitting the defense and passing up the middle to Amy Oberlin whose shot landed in the back of the Blue Hose net, giving the Flames a 2-0 advantage four minutes into the game.
PC (3-9-2, 1-4-2 Big South) attempted to kickstart its offense as sophomores Emily Davis (Greenville, S.C./Eastside) and Kate Baker (Forsythe, Ga./Monroe Academy) and junior Tricia Bryan (Pawley's Island, Waccamaw) registered shots against Liberty's goalkeeper, Ashley Nyholt, midway through the half. It was sophomore Morgan Fragapane (Bradenton, Fla./IMG Academy) who eventually scored for the Blue Hose as she received a pass from Baker and sent it past Nyholt and into the right corner of the net at the 40:02 mark.
Liberty (2-11-1, 2-5-0 Big South) dominated the second half, outshooting PC 11-2 and netting three goals. Flames' Mallory Neff received a pass to the far post and slipped it past junior goalkeeper Abby Young (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) at 70:39. Silvia Betancourt picked up her third assist of the night as she drew out Young and sent a pass to Oberlin who scored her second goal of the night from 17 yards out at 77:46. Elia Lake added the final goal for Liberty with five minutes remaining in the game to polish off the Flames 5-1 victory.
Young made seven saves on the evening while Liberty's Nyholt registered four.
The Blue Hose take a break from their conference schedule as they return home to host Campbell on Oct. 27 at 7 p.m.
