PC Defeats VMI 3-2 in Overtime

CLINTON, S.C. ? Sophomore forward Kate Baker (Forsythe, Ga./Monroe Academy) netted her first goal of the season eight minutes into overtime, giving Presbyterian College's women's soccer team a 3-2 victory over VMI on Wednesday evening at Martin Stadium.

Senior midfielder Sheldon Robinson (Simpsonville, S.C./Hillcrest) drew VMI's goalkeeper out and then passed to Baker who pushed it in from five yards out. The match was PC's second conference win of the year and gave the Blue Hose back-to-back wins over the Keydets in 2007 and 2008.

VMI (8-9-1, 4-3-1 Big South) scored first on Wednesday as senior Megan Strand struck from 15 yards out, sending the ball into the upper right angle of the net in the 19th minute of action.

Sophomore midfielder Emily Davis (Greenville, S.C./Eastside) evened the score at the 32:11 mark when she picked up a pass from sophomore Stephanie Aaron (Clemson, S.C./Appalachian State) and sent a shot soaring from 20 yards out. The teams entered halftime in a 1-1 stalemate.

PC (4-10-2, 2-4-2 Big South) had a chance to take the lead 19 minutes into the second half with a shot by freshman Morgan Fragapane (Bradenton, Fla./IMG Academy) that sent VMI goalie Heidi Beemer diving but ended up being just a hair wide.

The Keydets took the lead for the second time in the game half when freshman Olivia Moore scored her 12th goal of the season from eight yards out in the 69th minute of regulation.

The Blue Hose tied the score again as sophomore Stefani Thacker (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) took a corner kick and placed the ball directly in front of the net. Junior defender Rachel Lamb (Conyers, Ga./Salem) broke through the crowd in front of goal and knocked in her first goal of the season, tying the game at two with eight minutes left in regulation.

Junior goalkeeper Abby Young (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) made four saves on the evening while Beemer stopped two shots. The Keydets had a 14-11 edge in shots and 6-5 advantage with corner kicks.

The Blue Hose will host Charleston Southern for their final game of the season on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. A short ceremony will be held prior to the game to honor PC's four seniors.
